Description
Kii is a dryad who enters the narrative of Monster Musume: Everyday Life with Monster Girls after being rescued from an illegal liminal trafficking operation. She is discovered by the harpy Papi, who finds her weak and lost among the wreckage of a trafficker's crashed truck. Papi gives her the name Kii, inspired by the Japanese word for tree, and plants her in a forest on the outskirts of Tokyo. Unbeknownst to Papi, this forest is also an illegal dumping ground for experimental chemicals. The forest where Kii lives becomes her territory and a significant location in the series, eventually growing into a unique ecosystem due to her presence and later becoming home to other plant-based species like alraunes.
Kii's physical appearance is not static; it fluctuates based on the amount of nutrients and water she absorbs from the soil. In a malnourished state, she takes the form of a small, child-like girl. When she is healthy and has access to proper nutrients, she manifests as a buxom adult woman of average height. Her hair is composed of green leaves, and her limbs have a wooden, bark-like texture. She does not wear conventional clothing, instead using the leaves and vines that grow on her body to maintain modesty. Her bust size is notably large in her adult form, reportedly exceeding one hundred centimeters under certain conditions. Her body has the unique biological ability to secrete water and nutrient-rich fluids from her breasts, a substance similar to plant sap or nutrient extract that is central to several events in the story.
Kii's personality is heavily defined by her traumatic past. Her experience of being kidnapped and trafficked by humans has left her with severe misanthropic tendencies and a deep-seated distrust of humanity. This resentment is further fueled by witnessing humans continue to dump garbage in her forest. Because of this, she is often callous, sarcastic, and withdrawn, keeping most people at a distance. This aloof behavior is also partly a general characteristic of dryads, who are long-lived beings with a lifespan comparable to trees and are naturally unhurried in social interactions. Despite her general hostility, Kii is not entirely without warmth. She forms a genuine friendship with Papi, the one who saved and planted her, and with Suu, the slime girl. She also develops a tolerance for the human Kimihito Kurusu, though her feelings toward him remain complicated. Her hatred for humans is so pronounced that she takes a job as a professional poker dealer at the Kobold Casino specifically to watch people ruin themselves through gambling, viewing it as a form of indirect revenge.
Her role in the story begins as an antagonist. After absorbing the illegal chemical fertilizer from the dump, Kii undergoes a drastic and uncontrollable transformation into a gigantic, monstrous tree-creature. In this state, she attacks Kimihito, Papi, and Suu, who have come to the forest to investigate a series of threats. During the confrontation, Suu also grows to a massive size after falling into the same chemicals. The group learns that the only way to reverse the effect is to extract the excess nutrients from Kii's body, a process accomplished by sucking on her breasts. Kimihito, Papi, and Suu all participate in this process, which returns Kii to her normal, child-like state. Following this incident, Coordinator Kuroko Smith offers Kii the choice to return to her homeland or remain as the guardian of the forest. Kii chooses to stay, preferring the solitude of nature to living with a human host family, though this decision also leaves her status as an undocumented immigrant unresolved.
Key relationships in Kii's life are few but significant. Her bond with Papi is foundational, as Papi saved her life and gave her a name, though Papi herself quickly forgot about the dryad after planting her. Kii also grows close to Suu, with the two sharing a friendship that allows for playful interactions. Her relationship with Kimihito Kurusu is one of slow, grudging acceptance. While she initially attacks him and remains distrustful, she eventually allows him and Suu to harvest edible plants from her forest. She later helps him by allowing the use of a sauna built near her hot spring to trap an enemy. Kii's interactions with others, like the centaur Centorea or the giant Tionishia, are marked by cautious curiosity or outright indifference, though she shows a willingness to help those who are kind to her, such as the Kobold Polt.
Kii possesses several notable abilities inherent to her dryad physiology. Her primary means of sustenance is absorbing water and nutrients directly from the ground through her roots. She can manipulate the vines on her body to restrain and bind trespassers. She can also transform her lower body, changing her root system into two bipedal legs made of wood and bark. In addition to her physical traits, she is a quick learner, mastering the rules of poker to become a skilled dealer. She is also knowledgeable about the forest and its plants, although she cannot distinguish which ones are poisonous to non-plant-based beings. Kii experiences significant development from a purely antagonistic force into a guarded ally. After being cleansed of the chemicals and regaining her adult form, she begins to accept that not all humans are bad, even if she remains distant. Her hatred softens slightly as she participates more in the world around her, from allowing a sauna to be built in her forest to working a job in a casino. She remains fiercely protective of her forest, but her interactions with Kimihito and the other monster girls slowly reveal that beneath her prickly exterior is a being capable of concern and loyalty.
