OVA
Description
Mash is a character who appears in the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin manga and its OVA adaptation. He serves as a mobile suit pilot for the Principality of Zeon and is one of the three members of the elite squad known as the Black Tri-Stars, alongside Miguel Gaia and Ortega.
Mash was among the very first test pilots recruited by Dozle Zabi for Zeon's mobile suit development program. He was promoted to warrant officer at the same time as his friend Ortega and placed under the command of Gaia. The trio helped finalize the Mobile Worker MW-01 Model 01 Late Type together with Ramba Ral. With the outbreak of the One Year War, Mash and the other early pilots tested new units in combat. They intercepted the scientist Torenov Y. Minovsky when he attempted to defect to the Earth Federation at Granada, and though the mission ended with Minovsky's accidental death, the team demonstrated the superiority of their MS-05 Zaku I. During the Battle of Loum, Mash piloted an MS-06F Zaku II as part of the ambush on Federation Admiral Johann Ibrahim Revil's fleet; the Black Tri-Stars successfully captured Revil, earning widespread acclaim. Following the Antarctic Treaty, Mash and his team were transferred to Earth to support M'Quve with the new MS-09 Dom mobile suits. They spent time in South America perfecting their team formations in anticipation of confronting the Federation warship White Base, which had previously defeated Char Aznable and killed Ramba Ral.
Mash is physically distinguished by having only one eye, which makes him easily recognizable. Personality-wise, he is the quietest member of the Black Tri-Stars, speaking very rarely; in the original series his only recorded line was "Yes, sir!" Despite his reserved nature, he shares his teammates' pride in their combat record and is utterly loyal to the group. His primary motivation is the success of his team and the execution of orders without question. He demonstrates unwavering trust in his leader Gaia's tactical decisions and maintains a close personal bond with Ortega, having served alongside him since the early days of mobile suit development.
His role in the story is that of a skilled antagonist who, together with Gaia and Ortega, poses a significant threat to the White Base crew during the Earth operations arc. The Black Tri-Stars attack the White Base at the Urubamba Gorge in November UC 0079. Their coordinated combination attacks, known as the Jet Stream Attack, destroy Hayato Kobayashi's RX-75-4 Guntank and Job John's RX-77-02 Guncannon. Even the RX-78-02 Gundam piloted by Amuro Ray struggles against their relentless assault. However, Amuro realizes that the formation is designed to position an opponent for the trailing pilot. In a desperate maneuver, he jumps atop Gaia's Dom and stabs the unsuspecting Mash with a beam saber, killing him instantly. Mash's death breaks the Black Tri-Stars' formation for the first time and motivates Gaia and Ortega to seek revenge.
Mash lacks significant character development over the course of the story; he remains a dedicated, team-focused soldier until his death. His notable abilities include exceptional skill in formation flying and coordinated attacks, which are essential to the Black Tri-Stars' tactics. He is proficient in multiple mobile suit types, including the MS-05 Zaku I, MS-06F Zaku II, and MS-09 Dom, and he has mastered the precise timing required for the Jet Stream Attack through extensive training and combat experience.
