Description
Ortega is a supporting character in Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, appearing in both the manga and its animated adaptation. He is a mobile suit pilot in the Principality of Zeon forces and serves as a subordinate to Gaia, the leader of the elite team that becomes known as the Black Tri-Stars. Before the outbreak of the One Year War, Ortega was one of the first test pilots recruited for Dozle Zabi's mobile suit development project, working alongside his future teammates Gaia and Mash. He also had an old acquaintance with Ramba Ral, another prominent Zeon pilot. Through this work, Ortega contributed to the early practical development of Zeon's mobile suits.
Ortega is defined primarily as a close-quarters combat specialist. Within the Black Tri-Stars, his role is to deliver the finishing blow in the team's coordinated attacks, and he is noted for his skill in melee combat, typically wielding a heat hawk. During the Battle of Loum, Ortega pilots an MS-06R-1A High Mobility Zaku II and plays an active part in the engagement that leads to the capture of the Earth Federation commander General Revil. Ortega is specifically credited with sinking Revil's flagship by driving his heat hawk through the ship's bridge. For his exploits in that battle, he is promoted from ensign to lieutenant junior grade. Along with Gaia and Mash, he becomes known by the alias Black Tri-Stars, and the trio's machines thereafter carry black personal colors.
