Description
In the anime Maria the Virgin Witch, Ezechiel is an angel dispatched from Heaven to serve as a proxy for the Archangel Michael. Her primary mission is to supervise Maria, a powerful witch who persistently interferes in the battles of the Hundred Years' War. Ezechiel embodies the authority of Heaven, tasked with enforcing Michael's decree that Maria must cease using her magic in public, on pain of losing her powers if she ever loses her virginity.

Initially, Ezechiel presents a strict, officious, and somewhat belligerent demeanor. She frequently delivers lectures to Maria about the rules she has broken and the consequences she faces, appearing as a by-the-book agent of divine will. Her personality is marked by a degree of naivety and sheltering, as she primarily parrots the doctrines of Heaven rather than speaking from personal conviction or experience. However, this exterior hides a core of innocence, and she is often described as a cute and lovable character, particularly as she begins to show more emotion. Her interactions with Maria and her circle reveal an individual who, despite her heavenly origins, is not immune to the complexities of human suffering and empathy.

Ezechiel's motivations are rooted in duty, but they evolve significantly over the course of the story. Sent to stop Maria, she finds herself increasingly sympathetic to the witch's pacifist ideals. A key moment in her development occurs when Michael amends her orders: if she witnesses Maria using magic on a battlefield, she must personally transform into a spear and strike Maria down. Despite being given this direct command, Ezechiel cannot bring herself to kill the woman she has come to understand, defying her orders from Heaven. This act of insubordination is the turning point in her role, transforming her from a passive enforcer into an active character who prioritizes her own judgment over divine command.

Her most significant relationship is with Maria herself. What begins as a cat-and-mouse game, with Maria constantly finding loopholes to use her magic without Ezechiel seeing, gradually deepens into a genuine bond. Ezechiel starts to warm up to Maria and finds a sense of belonging within Maria's makeshift family, which includes the familiars Artemis and Priapus. This connection directly fuels her defiance of Michael. Her relationships with the other characters, such as the young villager Anne who nicknames her Popo, further ground her and soften her celestial rigidity.

Ezechiel undergoes one of the most dramatic transformations in the series. She transitions from a flat, unquestioning follower of God to an individual with her own views, shaped by her experiences on Earth. For her insubordination in refusing to kill Maria, she is sentenced to become a fallen angel. However, this fall is not presented as a simple punishment; it is a complex form of mercy. She is promised reincarnation as a human being. In a final, decisive act of personal choice, Michael commands her to select the woman who will bear her in her new human life, and without hesitation, Ezechiel chooses Maria to become her mother.

In terms of abilities, Ezechiel’s powers are tied directly to her role as a divine agent. She frequently takes the form of a small white dove, allowing her to observe Maria discreetly. Her other form is that of a weapon, literally becoming the spear of Michael. In this form, she is sentient and possesses the power to strike down a witch like Maria, though she ultimately chooses not to use this ability for lethal force against her.
