Description
Maria is a powerful young witch who lives in an enchanted forest in medieval France during the Hundred Years’ War. She shares her home with two familiars, a succubus named Artemis and an incubus named Priapus. Her deep hatred of bloodshed and conflict drives her to use her magic to intervene in battles between the French and English, often summoning large mythical beasts to block armies and force ceasefires without causing fatal harm. Her motivation is purely pacifistic: she cannot stand to see innocent people suffer and believes that no war is justified.

Maria’s personality is compassionate and stubborn. She is impulsive at times but also clever, using creative loopholes to continue her peacekeeping despite heavenly restrictions. Because she has remained a virgin, she is easily flustered by romantic or sexual topics, and her familiars frequently tease her about it. She prefers her own company but forms deep bonds with those who earn her trust.

Her role in the story is that of a conscientious objector who challenges both human institutions and divine authority. By interfering in human affairs, she draws the attention of the Archangel Michael, who forbids her from using magic in public and decrees that her powers will vanish if she loses her virginity. The angel Ezekiel is sent to enforce this rule, yet Maria continues to find ways to help people, leading to conflict with the Church and a monk named Bernard who sees her as a heretic.

Key relationships include her growing bond with Joseph, a young soldier who falls in love with her and becomes her emotional anchor. Her familiars Artemis and Priapus serve as both allies and comic relief. Over time, Ezekiel shifts from antagonist to friend, ultimately choosing to side with Maria. Viv, an older witch, and Edwina, a reclusive witch, also aid her when she is captured and imprisoned by the Church.

Through the series, Maria matures from a solitary intervener into someone who values personal connection and accepts her own vulnerability. After being imprisoned and nearly executed, she confronts her feelings for Joseph, accepts his marriage proposal, and regains her magic. In the final judgment, Michael spares her after hearing testimonies from people she has helped, and she leaves the forest to live with Joseph in a village, with Ezekiel set to be reborn as her child.

Notable abilities include immense magical power capable of affecting entire battlefields and towns. She channels spells through a staff that she rides like a broom and a cauldron used for summoning creatures and mixing potions. Her magic encompasses large-scale illusions, summoning dragons and other beasts, and manipulating opposing factions to halt combat. Despite these powers, she always commands her summoned beings to avoid lethal harm, reflecting her commitment to peace.
