Description
Priapos is an incubus familiar in the anime Maria the Virgin Witch, created by the witch Maria at the request of her other familiar, Artemis. His origins lie in a male owl that Artemis found and rescued in the woods; Maria transformed this owl into a demonic servant intended to act as an incubus, a type of demon associated with seduction and desire. However, because Maria is both a virgin and genuinely naive about the male body, she had never seen the relevant anatomical details and inadvertently created him without male genitalia. This omission is a source of lasting frustration and embarrassment for Priapos, and it significantly limits his ability to carry out the seductive duties normally expected of an incubus.
In appearance, Priapos takes the form of a teenage boy with green eyes and short blond or yellow hair. In personality, he contrasts sharply with Artemis, his fellow familiar. Where Artemis is cynical, teasing, and openly provocative, Priapos is more level-headed, polite, and restrained, often serving as the voice of reason within Maria's household. He takes on much of the domestic work in Maria's forest cottage, including most of the cooking, and he supports Maria's efforts to intervene in the battles of the Hundred Years' War by helping to distract and disrupt the male-dominated armies she opposes, though his missing anatomy makes his part in such schemes more complicated than intended.
His motivations center on a desire to be useful and to find his place despite his physical shortcoming. He is deeply devoted to Maria, who created him, and he remains loyal to her even though she is the source of his deficiency. His relationship with Artemis is marked by a sibling-like rivalry; the two bicker and compete but ultimately cooperate to carry out Maria's plans. He also forms a connection with Joseph, the young human who becomes Maria's closest companion, and he empathizes with the difficulties of a mortal caught up in a world of magic and divine conflict.
Over the course of the story, Priapos develops from a figure defined largely by his comic misfortune into one who searches for identity and purpose beyond his intended function as a seducer. His arc finds resolution in the recognition that his loyalty to Maria and his supportive, domestic contributions give him genuine value, even if he cannot perform the role for which he was originally made. His notable abilities are those of a demon familiar: a humanoid form, the capacity to serve his creator's magic, and the ability to take part in the illusions and diversions Maria uses to stop battles, though his effectiveness is always shaped by the incompleteness of his creation.
