Description
Issei Ryudo is a supporting character in Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works, known for his role as the student council president of Homurahara Academy and his close friendship with the protagonist, Shirou Emiya. He is a second-year student in Class 2-C and lives at the Ryudo Temple on the outskirts of Fuyuki City, where his father serves as the head priest. As the youngest son of the temple family, Issei is expected to one day become a Buddhist monk, a future he accepts without particular attachment to his own appearance, even knowing it will require him to shave his head. He walks two hours each day to attend school, a testament to his discipline and physical endurance.
Personality-wise, Issei is characterized by a straight-laced, serious, and honest nature. He embodies the role of student council president completely, having been elected by an overwhelming majority simply because of his "student council aura," and he is deeply passionate about enacting school reforms, such as changing club allowance distributions and amending regulations. He is a person of logic and order, preferring to do things by the book. Despite his serious demeanor, he holds a great deal of respect for his mentor, Souichirou Kuzuki, a teacher at the academy with whom he would often practice paired kata on holidays. Issei's most notable personal quirk is his strong distrust of women, a trait that primarily manifests as a specific and intense dislike for Rin Tohsaka, who served as his vice president during their four years together in junior high. This history led to a prolonged behind-the-scenes feud, and he often refers to her with great suspicion, viewing her as a rival. However, this distrust does not extend to all females; he instantly takes a liking to Saber, claiming that "even he can tell" she is a good person, and he also respects Ayako Mitsuzuri, the captain of the archery club. In the Unlimited Blade Works anime adaptation, his dislike is portrayed less as a fear of all women and more as a specific, deep-seated animosity toward Rin.
Issei's primary role in the story is as Shirou Emiya's closest friend and a fixture of the everyday school life that contrasts with the supernatural Holy Grail War. He frequently asks Shirou to repair broken school equipment to save on costs and enjoys eating the lunches Shirou makes for him, often sharing meals and conversations in the student council office. He becomes inadvertently involved in the Holy Grail War when Rin Tohsaka suspects that the Master of the Servant Caster might be living at Ryudo Temple. In Unlimited Blade Works, this leads to a memorable scene where Shirou, following Rin's theory, strips Issei in the student council room to check for Command Spells, forcing the confused and resistant Issei to comply. Although found innocent, his subsequent information about Kuzuki bringing a fiancée to live at the temple unknowingly confirms Caster's location for the group.
While Issei remains an ordinary human with no direct involvement in most of the supernatural battles, his life is impacted by the war. The Ryudo Temple becomes a key battlefield, and at one point in the Unlimited Blade Works anime adaptation, Issei, along with his brother and over fifty other residents of the temple, is attacked by the Servant Gilgamesh. They are left unconscious but survive, later being taken to the hospital. His development is subtle but present. He holds his teacher Kuzuki in high regard, and while the story does not dwell on it, the aftermath of the war leaves him without his mentor. In the epilogue of the Unlimited Blade Works anime, he is seen interacting with Shirou and watching Rin with continued caution, but also with a sense of resigned normalcy, still fulfilling his duties as student council president and bickering with friends like Ayako about club budgets.
Regarding notable abilities, Issei possesses no magical or supernatural powers, but he is an accomplished martial artist. He holds a black belt in karate and would have likely joined the karate club had he not become student council president. He also practices Zen meditation and enjoys strategy games such as go and solving crossword puzzles.
