TV-Series
Description
Mao serves as the local information broker of Yokohama, operating from the city’s Chinatown district. He appears as a young man of average build with a mop of brown hair, brown eyes, and a pair of black glasses. In the first season he is typically seen wearing a long green Chinese-style cloak, while in Re:␣Hamatora his attire changes to a more casual light brown track suit. He is almost always in the company of a small, silent companion known as Tanker-kun.

His primary role in the story is that of a neutral and discreet source of intelligence. Mao maintains an extensive network of contacts and seems to know about nearly everything that happens in the city. The detectives of Hamatora, particularly Nice, regularly approach him for information on the cases they investigate. Mao operates on a strict transactional basis: he exchanges information only for payment, and the depth and accuracy of what he provides are directly proportional to the amount he receives. He maintains a give-and-take relationship with his clients, never offering more than what has been paid for.

In terms of personality, Mao is composed, pragmatic, and businesslike. He does not become emotionally involved in the affairs of his clients and keeps his own thoughts and loyalties carefully guarded. His neutral stance makes him a reliable but detached figure in the story, someone who can be counted on for facts but not for personal intervention.

Little is revealed about Mao’s background or personal motivations. He appears to have no Minimum ability of his own, relying instead on his wits, his network, and his knowledge of the city’s underworld. His role remains consistent across both Hamatora: The Animation and Re:␣Hamatora: he is a supporting figure who provides crucial leads and background details that drive the investigations forward. He does not undergo significant personal development or character change over the course of the series, and his motivations remain largely professional.

His key relationship is with Nice, who is his most frequent customer. The dynamic is strictly professional, though it is built on mutual understanding and a long history of dealings. Mao also interacts with other members of the Hamatora circle and with various figures from Yokohama’s criminal underworld, always maintaining the same careful, transactional distance.

Mao’s notable ability is not a supernatural power but rather his exceptional skill as an information broker. His knowledge of the city, his network of contacts, and his ability to acquire and assess information make him an indispensable resource for the protagonists. He also demonstrates a keen sense of self-preservation and an ability to navigate dangerous situations without drawing attention to himself.
