Description
Hajime is a central figure in the story, known for her quiet, stoic demeanor that is most often broken by an intense focus on food. She is almost always seen eating something, from hamburgers to curry and spaghetti, and this apparent apathy is her most immediate trait. However, beneath this calm exterior, she possesses a deep sensitivity to the emotions of those around her. When someone is angry or upset, her instinct is to offer comfort not with words, but by sharing a portion of her meal, revealing a caring nature that her expressionless face rarely shows.
Her past is shrouded in severe amnesia, as she has no memory of her life before being found. In truth, she was an abandoned child taken in by the Minimum Agency for experimental research. Designated only as "Success Number 0-1," she was confined in a hidden laboratory. Her life changed when Nice, while exploring the facility, heard her stomach growling through a locked door and offered her a half-eaten hamburger. This act of kindness is the reason for her deep fondness for the food, and it was Nice who gave her the name "Hajime." Their attempted escape from the facility ended in tragedy when Nice was shot, an event that triggered her hidden power for the first time. Following this incident, a man known only as Master relinquished his authority to become the guardian of both Hajime and another test subject, Koneko, and together they opened Cafe Nowhere.
Hajime's role in the story evolves significantly. As a founding member of the Hamatora detective agency alongside Nice and Murasaki, she is a constant presence at Cafe Nowhere. After Nice is presumed dead following a major riot, she steps up to fill his position, forming "Hamatora Mark II" with Murasaki and taking a more active, assertive role in their investigations. During this period, she carries Nice's battered headphones around her neck, showing a sentimental attachment that contrasts with her usual reserve. Her quiet loyalty is absolute; her motivation is intrinsically linked to her found family, particularly Nice, whose safety and presence she values above almost all else.
Her most notable ability is a unique Minimum (a special power possessed by certain individuals) known as the Nihilist Minimum. Triggered by despair, this power has the terrifying ability to negate almost anything, turning it into nothingness. It can nullify the abilities of other Minimum holders, revert transformations, and grant Hajime accelerated regeneration. This power radiates from her passively and can gradually weaken the Minimums of those who stay near her for extended periods. When fully activated, it creates a sphere of dark energy that erases everything within it, though using this power usually causes her to lose consciousness with no memory of the event. Her growing emotional range in the second season reflects her development, as she begins to speak more frequently and express herself, a change noted by her friends. Ultimately, Hajime is a soft-spoken but resilient figure whose tragic history and devastating power make her a key to understanding the larger conflicts, even as she finds her strength in simple acts of kindness and sharing a meal.
