Description
Hirotaka Wakamatsu is a first-year high school student at Roman Academy and a supporting character in the story. He stands at 185 centimeters tall with a lean yet athletic build, brown hair, and green eyes. As a member of the boys' basketball team, he has earned a spot as a starter in his first year, demonstrating considerable athletic talent. He also assists the manga artist Umetarou Nozaki, primarily handling the meticulous tasks of erasing pencil lines and applying screentones.
Wakamatsu's personality is a study in contrasts. He has a calm and easygoing demeanor, but this is paired with an unusually sensitive and naive nature. His stress tolerance is remarkably low, leading him to suffer from insomnia and stomach ailments. This sensitivity also makes him prone to taking things at face value, never quite understanding why his well-intentioned plans go wrong. Despite his physical strength, his friends worry about his mental fragility, even expressing concern that he might snap under pressure.
A significant source of this stress is the loud and aggressive upperclassman, Yuzuki Seo. As a ringer for the girls' basketball team, Seo practices in the same gymnasium and relentlessly targets Wakamatsu with basketballs and rough play, making practice a terrifying ordeal for him. His attempts to stand up to her are consistently foiled by his unfortunate habit of consulting Nozaki's collection of shoujo manga for advice. For instance, a planned letter of challenge becomes a love letter, which only encourages Seo further. This has created a complex dynamic where he outwardly claims to hate her.
The irony of the situation is that Wakamatsu suffers from insomnia because of Seo, but the only cure is the beautiful singing voice of the school's renowned soprano, the "Lorelei of the Choir Club". He is completely oblivious to the fact that the Lorelei is, in fact, Yuzuki Seo. He becomes a devoted fan of the Lorelei, referring to her as his "goddess" and believing her voice has the power to soothe his soul and allow him to sleep. This puts him in the peculiar position of longing for the ethereal Lorelei while detesting her real-life counterpart.
Wakamatsu's core motivation is a desire for peace, both from his tormentor and from his own insomnia. His drive to secure new recordings of the Lorelei's singing leads him to become more deeply involved in Nozaki's manga production, hoping to exchange his labor for new songs. His role in the story is often that of the well-meaning but clueless junior, whose pure-hearted actions consistently backfire in humorous ways. He serves as a key connection between Nozaki's past and present, and his odd-couple dynamic with Seo is a major subplot.
He shares a close, respectful relationship with Nozaki, his senior from the middle school basketball club. Despite his disappointment that Nozaki quit basketball to draw manga, he still looks up to him and follows his instructions without question. As a manga assistant, he works alongside Chiyo Sakura and the drama club's Masayuki Hori. He also forms an unlikely friendship with the self-conscious Mikoto Mikoshiba, who is often exasperated by Wakamatsu's naivety. In a notable misunderstanding, the handsome and princely Yuu Kashima is frequently mistaken by Wakamatsu as a boy, leading to a series of comical errors, such as worrying that Seo was being romantically toyed with by another man.
There is subtle development in Wakamatsu's character, though it largely revolves around his connection to Seo. His position evolves from pure victim to someone who occasionally shows unexpected reactions, like getting upset when Seo suggests she will take another boy to the movies. This suggests a growing, if unconscious, attachment, a possibility his friends observe with amusement. In later manga chapters, he even becomes aware of Seo's embarrassment regarding certain topics and learns to exploit it for his own amusement, revealing a slightly mischievous side.
Despite his shortcomings in social situations and creative work, Wakamatsu has notable abilities. His physical skills are top-tier, excelling in physical education and basketball. He is also exceptionally good at simple, repetitive manual labor, making him a highly efficient and valued assistant for applying screentones and erasing, tasks he performs with a clean and precise hand. This dedication extends to his academic life, where he is quite studious and performs well in subjects like English, though he struggles with modern literature. His pure and honest nature, while often a source of trouble, remains his most defining and endearing trait.
