Description
Mikoto Mikoshiba, widely known by his nickname Mikorin, is a high school student at Roman Academy and one of Umetarou Nozaki’s manga assistants. He is also the best friend and classmate of Yuu Kashima. At first glance, Mikoto appears to be a charismatic and flirtatious ladies’ man, effortlessly attracting the attention of many girls and earning admiration from male peers. However, this confident exterior is a facade; his true personality is painfully shy, timid, and deeply tsundere. He frequently makes bold, flirty remarks only to immediately cringe and become mortified by his own words. This gap between his projected image and his actual self is a central trait, and it is precisely this personality that Nozaki unknowingly uses as the inspiration for the heroine Mamiko in his manga.
Mikoto’s motivations are rooted in a desire to be seen as cool and competent, yet he struggles with social anxiety and a need for approval. He genuinely wants to help his friends but is often too embarrassed to offer assistance directly, requiring others to coax him into contributing. As an assistant, he has a specific artistic niche: while he cannot draw characters or objects well, he is highly skilled at drawing flowers, sparkles, effects, and accessories that enhance the charm of Nozaki’s artwork. His academic strengths lie in Biology and English, though he struggles with Government class. He has a fondness for hamburgers and a dislike for peppers and bitter foods.
Within the story, Mikoto plays a key role as both a comic foil and a source of unexpected emotional insight. Despite his own obliviousness to how others perceive him, he is surprisingly perceptive about the romantic dynamics around him. He quickly deduces Chiyo Sakura’s feelings for Nozaki and even figures out that Yuzuki Seo is the singer Lorelei that Hirotaka Wakamatsu admires, though he chooses not to interfere. His closest relationships are with Nozaki, whom he assists and often teases, and with Kashima, his cheerful and equally charismatic best friend. He also develops a unique online friendship with Nozaki’s younger brother Mayu, chatting under a pseudonym without either knowing the other’s real identity. Mikoto’s development is subtle but consistent: he learns to be more open about his vulnerabilities and to accept help from others, as seen when he texts Sakura to rescue him from a swarm of female admirers. His signature habit of borrowing pickup lines from dating sim games and his self-conscious nature make him a memorable and endearing figure in the series.
