Description
Kobayakawa Hideaki is a supporting character in Sengoku Basara: End of Judgement, presented as the commander of the Kobayakawa army whose actions heavily influence the Battle of Sekigahara. His historical counterpart's pivotal choice to switch sides is a central element of his role in the narrative, and he carries the formal title of Kingo. His personality stands in stark contrast to the bold warriors surrounding him, defined primarily by a deep aversion to battle and chronic indecisiveness. He is a coward at heart, finding no glory in warfare. This is balanced by a single-minded passion for food, earning him the self-proclaimed moniker of the Gourmet General, and his soldiers mirror this theme by wielding oversized meat cleavers as their standard arms.
Kobayakawa is largely motivated by personal comfort and survival rather than grand political ambitions. The one notable exception to this self-interest is his profound and unwavering bond with the mysterious monk Tenkai, who is a constant presence at his side. This loyalty serves as the primary driving force behind his actions. Within the conflict, he is a soldier in the Western Army under Ishida Mitsunari but ultimately plays a decisive role by betraying Mitsunari and defecting to Tokugawa Ieyasu, a turn of events that seals the Eastern Army's victory.
While his core traits of gluttony and timidity remain largely consistent, his character is given depth through his relationship with Tenkai. When Tenkai is placed in mortal danger, Kobayakawa overcomes his deep fear of combat and rushes into the fray to protect him, demonstrating a hidden capacity for genuine courage and devotion. In battle, he fights in a clumsy and chaotic manner, primarily wielding a large metal pot as a weapon, swinging it wildly against his foes.
