Description
Kyoji Shinkawa is a supporting character and the final antagonist of the Phantom Bullet arc in Sword Art Online II. In the virtual reality game Gun Gale Online, he plays under the alias Spiegel, a name derived from the German word for mirror. He is the younger brother of Shouichi Shinkawa, a former member of the player-killing guild Laughing Coffin in the death game Sword Art Online.
Kyoji comes from a well-off background, being the son of a hospital director. He is initially introduced as a friend and admirer of Shino Asada, the sniper known as Sinon. He is the one who introduced her to Gun Gale Online, and the two share a bond over their experiences with firearms and gaming. On the surface, Kyoji appears helpful and supportive, but beneath that exterior lies deep insecurity and resentment. He built his in-game avatar, Spiegel, with a heavy focus on agility, following misguided advice from a player named Zekushido. When he later realized that this build prevented him from effectively wielding high-strength weapons, he developed a bitter hatred toward strength-oriented players and a simmering sense of inadequacy.
His personality gradually darkens. He becomes obsessed with Shino, twisting his admiration into a possessive and dangerous fixation. This obsession leads him to attempt a murder-suicide with her in the real world, a plan thwarted by the protagonist Kirito. Kyoji’s mental state deteriorates as he is manipulated by his older brother Shouichi, who channels Kyoji’s frustration into the creation of the Death Gun conspiracy. Together, they devise a method to kill players in real life by synchronizing an in-game fatal shot with a lethal injection administered at the victim’s home.
In the Death Gun scheme, Kyoji takes on the avatar Sterben, which resembles a cloaked, skull-masked gunman. He personally carries out the in-game shootings, including the killing of players like Zenkushido and Usujiro Takaro, while his brother or an accomplice performs the real-world murders. This dual role allows him to act out his violent urges while maintaining the illusion that Death Gun can kill across the virtual and real worlds.
Kyoji’s key relationships reveal his fractured state. With Shino, his friendship curdles into stalking and a desire to control her fate. With his brother Shouichi, he is both co-conspirator and subordinate, easily swayed by Shouichi’s ruthless leadership. His interactions with other players are marked by contempt for those he perceives as brute-force fighters, and he betrays the trust of the GGO community. His eventual confrontation with Kirito and Sinon exposes the extent of his delusions and leads to his arrest alongside his brother.
Over the course of the arc, Kyoji Shinkawa shifts from a seemingly timid young man to a manipulated and mentally broken antagonist. His descent is driven by personal failures, toxic influences, and an inability to cope with rejection. In terms of notable abilities, he is a skilled player within Gun Gale Online, using his agility-focused avatar to move swiftly and handle lighter firearms, including the iconic Death Gun pistol. His real-world knowledge of drugs, stemming from his family’s medical background, enables the use of succinylcholine in the killings. Although he is not a frontline combatant in the same vein as veterans of Sword Art Online, his role as Spiegel and Sterben makes him a dangerous and tragic figure within the narrative.
