ONA
Description
Mamoru Chiba is the civilian identity of Tuxedo Mask, the masked hero who appears to aid the Sailor Guardians in the anime Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal. He is a high school student with short, neat black hair and deep blue eyes, and he occasionally wears glasses when reading. Born on August 3, his family background is marked by tragedy: when he was six years old, his parents died in a car accident. The trauma of that event triggered the surfacing of memories from his previous life as Prince Endymion, the prince of the Golden Kingdom of Earth. As a result, Mamoru lives alone and carries a sense of loneliness and loss, which informs his reserved and introspective personality.

In Crystal, Mamoru is portrayed as intelligent, studious, and quiet, with a stoic demeanor that commands admiration from his peers. He harbors a strong aspiration to become a doctor, a career that aligns with his later-developed healing abilities. Though he initially appears brusque and critical—especially toward Usagi Tsukino, whom he meets in an early comic encounter when he is hit by her discarded test paper—his underlying kindness and protectiveness soon become evident. As he regains more of his past life memories, he grows more emotionally open and supportive.

Mamoru’s transformation into Tuxedo Mask is initially involuntary; his changes are triggered by Sailor Moon’s own transformations or by visions of danger. He is guided by precognitive dreams in which the spirit of Princess Serenity, his past love, urges him to search for the Legendary Silver Crystal. He adopts the Tuxedo Mask disguise to hunt for the crystal incognito, and later to assist the Sailor Guardians in battle. Unlike the Sailor Guardians, he does not have a transformation phrase, and his changes often happen spontaneously until he gains conscious control later in the story.

As Tuxedo Mask, he serves as a support and protector, using both physical and magical abilities. He throws enchanted roses as darts to distract or injure enemies, and he wields a cane as a weapon. His signature attack in Crystal is Tuxedo La Smoking Bomber, a blast of luminous energy launched from his hand. He also possesses psychic powers, most notably psychometry—the ability to read the history or emotions of objects or people by touch—and healing powers that allow him to restore others. These powers develop further across the series, especially as he learns to wield the Golden Crystal, the Earth’s equivalent to the Moon’s Silver Crystal.

Mamoru’s role in the story is multifaceted. He acts as a conduit of information, often appearing to offer advice or a timely rescue, and his connection to the Earth and its energies makes him a guardian of the planet in his own right. He shares a deep, fated bond with Sailor Moon, the reincarnation of Princess Serenity. Their relationship begins with antagonism and misunderstanding but gradually deepens into mutual respect and romance. In Crystal, their development is more gradual and warm than in earlier adaptations, and they form a partnership based on trust and shared purpose. Mamoru also forms a close bond with the other Sailor Guardians, especially as they learn of his true identity and his past as Prince Endymion.

Key relationships include his friendship with Motoki Furuhata, a fellow student and confidant, and later his role as a father figure to his future daughter, Chibiusa. His connection to the Earth’s royal lineage places him at odds with the Dark Kingdom, which attempts to brainwash him and turn him into Dark Endymion. This arc tests his loyalty and resolve, but he ultimately breaks free with Sailor Moon’s help. In Crystal, his character development is more closely tied to the manga’s narrative: he struggles with his sense of purpose, sometimes worrying that he is more of a liability than a help, but he consistently steps forward to protect those he loves.

Throughout the series, Mamoru evolves from a solitary, memory-haunted youth into a decisive hero who willingly fights alongside the Sailor Guardians. His abilities, both psychic and physical, complement Sailor Moon’s powers, and together they face threats ranging from the Dark Kingdom to later enemies like the Black Moon Clan and Shadow Galactica. Despite the challenges he faces—including being kidnapped, brainwashed, or killed in various arcs—his unwavering love for Usagi and his commitment to the Earth remain constants. In Crystal, his portrayal is notably more consistent and grounded than in earlier adaptations, emphasizing his intelligence, emotional depth, and supportive role within the team.
