Description
Ecchan is a small, chibi-style creature and a supporting character in Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok. Recognizable by pink hair, red eyes, and cat-like ears, Ecchan is a shikigami, a type of spiritual familiar, whose creation was entirely accidental. Loki was attempting to summon a shinigami, or death god, to assist with a case, but due to his powers being sealed in his child-like form, the ritual went awry and produced Ecchan instead. The name Ecchan is derived from the Japanese word erai, meaning amazing, which Loki used to name the new familiar.
In personality, Ecchan is depicted as cute and largely animalistic, communicating primarily with a distinctive cry that sounds like punyan. Despite this simple mode of expression, Ecchan demonstrates a capacity for learning, beginning to develop the ability to speak in simple words as time passes. The creature is loyal and serves as a useful assistant to Loki in his detective work.
Ecchan's primary role in the story is to act as a helpful familiar for Loki. One of its most notable abilities is the power to freely transform its shape into objects that are smaller than itself, such as an exploding doll, which Loki can use for various tactical purposes. Ecchan also has the ability to absorb demons and other spiritual entities. This power is so significant that the Norn goddess Verdandi used parts of Ecchan's body to create the ring Draupnir, which Loki later forged into the magical blade Levatein, a key weapon in the series.
Ecchan exists in a unique space between the visible and invisible worlds. Ordinary humans, including the series' main heroine Mayura Daidoji, cannot see Ecchan because they lack any spiritual power. However, those with a sixth sense or supernatural connections, such as Mayura's father who possesses spiritual abilities, and other gods like Reiya Oshima, can perceive the creature. This invisibility is often played for comedy, as Loki enjoys using Ecchan to startle Mayura's father. Ecchan's key relationships are primarily with Loki, whom it serves faithfully, and with Yamino, another inhabitant of the detective agency, though the creature remains invisible to the human Mayura who is unaware of its existence.
