Queen Metaria is the ruler of the Dark Kingdom and the hidden source of evil behind that organization in Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal. She is not a physical being but an extraterrestrial entity composed of pure dark purple energy, appearing as an amorphous shadow-like creature with glowing green eyes, a red mouth, and a bright reddish-purple diamond-shaped mark on her forehead. Within the continuity that Crystal follows, she is described as a demon born from the sun, a malignant force of darkness rather than a person with a distinct identity.
Her background reaches back to the age of the Silver Millennium, the ancient era of the Moon Kingdom. At that time, when Prince Endymion of Earth and Princess Serenity of the Moon were to be united, Queen Metaria exploited the bitterness of certain humans who resented the union. She preyed on the unrequited love that the human woman Beryl held for Endymion, corrupting her and turning much of Earth's population against the Moon Kingdom. This corruption led to a war that brought about the destruction of the Silver Millennium. In response, Queen Serenity used the power of the Silver Crystal to seal Queen Metaria away, imprisoning her so that she could not continue spreading darkness.
In the modern era, the reincarnated Beryl rediscovers the sealed Queen Metaria in the Arctic region known as D-Point and is returned to her service. From that point, Queen Metaria acts as the supreme power behind the Dark Kingdom, while Beryl serves as her chief agent and voice in the mortal world. The energy that the Dark Kingdom's forces harvest from humans is channeled into Queen Metaria, gradually restoring her strength so that she can be fully released from her imprisonment.
Queen Metaria's personality is minimal because she is less a character and more a force of pure malice.
