Description
Anya Hepburn, whose full name is Princess Anastasia Yngling, is a main protagonist in the Soul Eater Not! story. She is a fourteen-year-old girl who enrolls as a Meister student at the Death Weapon Meister Academy. Coming from a life of royalty in a castle, her primary motivation for joining the school is a deep desire to experience freedom and understand the lives of ordinary, common people. Upon arriving, she quickly identifies the kind-hearted and unpretentious Tsugumi Harudori as the ultimate example of a commoner and becomes determined to form a partnership with her.
Anya possesses long blonde hair, blue eyes, and a slim build. Her personality is complex and fits the archetype of a tsundere, as she often acts cold, proud, and haughty to mask a softer, more vulnerable interior. Her manner of speech is very formal and she can be blunt and condescending, sometimes making fun of others. This behavior is largely a result of her sheltered upbringing, which makes social interaction with her peers awkward for her. Despite this exterior, she genuinely wants to make friends and deeply cares for those close to her, often becoming sad or jealous when she feels left out. She has a hidden gluttonous side and can be quite naive about the value of money, spending large amounts carelessly. She is also surprisingly bold and eager to take on new experiences, such as working a part-time job at the Deathbucks cafe with more enthusiasm than she initially lets on.
In terms of abilities, Anya is a competent fighter. She was forced to learn Royal Karate while living in her castle, which gives her a strong foundation in hand-to-hand combat. As a Meister, she is capable of wielding her weapon partner, Tsugumi Harudori, who transforms into a halberd. Her analytical skills make her a sharp observer, and she can perform techniques with Tsugumi, including a thrusting attack called Royal Joust. Through Soul Resonance with her partners, she can execute more powerful techniques like the Spring Bird Attack.
Anya’s key relationships are at the heart of the story. She, Tsugumi, and the air-headed but physically gifted Meme Tatane form a unique and unconventional three-way partnership. While Anya initially desires to be Tsugumi’s sole Meister, she ends up sharing the role with Meme. Her relationship with Meme is one of exasperated friendship, as she often has to act as a leader and decision-maker for her forgetful partner, though she shows genuine concern for Meme’s safety. Her relationship with Tsugumi is built on her fascination with Tsugumi’s commoner nature, though she often hides her true feelings of friendship behind a critical facade. She also has significant interactions with upperclassmen like Eternal Feather, whom she respects, and Akane Hoshi and Clay Sizemore, whom she initially teases but later shows humility towards after they demonstrate their strength.
Anya’s role in the story evolves significantly. Early on, she is a new student adjusting to dorm life, part-time work, and the chaos of the academy. Her character development is closely tied to the central conflict of the series, which involves a threat from a witch named Shaula Gorgon. It is revealed that Anya is a princess, and her classmates Akane and Clay were secretly assigned as her bodyguards. This revelation forces her to confront the reality that she may be sent back to her sheltered life against her will. When her teacher, Sid Barett, is killed and Meme is possessed by the enemy, Anya is ordered to leave for her own safety. However, she resists, declaring that she will not desert her partners. This moment marks a turning point, showing her growth from a girl seeking escape into a loyal and courageous friend. Ultimately, she remains to fight alongside Tsugumi to save Meme, and the three successfully perform a triple Soul Resonance to defeat the main antagonist, solidifying their bond as a permanent trio.
