Description
Mannish Boy is a secondary antagonist in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, appearing exclusively in the Death Thirteen story arc. He is an infant who possesses the intellect and speech of an adult, making him an evil genius baby. He serves DIO as a Stand user and attempts to assassinate the Joestar Group by trapping them in the nightmare world created by his Stand, Death Thirteen.
Mannish Boy has the physical appearance of a dark-skinned baby with large ears, sharp fangs, yellow eyes, and short black hair. He wears a turban and a scarf. Despite his age, he demonstrates remarkable physical dexterity, such as killing a scorpion with a safety pin. His personality is sadistic and arrogant; he takes pleasure in tormenting his victims rather than killing them quickly, and he laughs maniacally while doing so. When around others in the waking world, he pretends to be a helpless, ordinary baby to avoid arousing suspicion.
His primary motivation is to serve DIO and eliminate the Joestar Group. He shows no empathy or respect for human life and enjoys the psychological torture he inflicts. His confidence in his Stand's power leads him to underestimate his opponents, which ultimately causes his defeat.
In the story, Mannish Boy is handed over to the Joestar Group by a frightened woman who claims they need to find his parents. The group reluctantly takes him along, unaware of his true nature. On an airplane, he uses Death Thirteen to attack Noriaki Kakyoin in his dreams. Kakyoin's violent sleep movements cause Joseph Joestar to crash the plane. When Kakyoin wakes up, he cannot remember the dream and begins acting paranoid, suspecting the baby. His companions think he has gone mad from stress. To prove his theory, Kakyoin carves the words "Baby Stand" into his own arm while inside the dream, so that the wound will remain when he wakes. However, the wound disappears because the dream world cannot affect the real body. Determined, Kakyoin asks Jean Pierre Polnareff to knock him unconscious while keeping his Stand, Hierophant Green, active. This allows Kakyoin to maintain awareness in the dream world and summon his Stand, which defeats Death Thirteen by shattering its scythe and destroying the dream dimension. After the Stand is defeated, Mannish Boy is left helpless. Kakyoin forces him to eat baby food mixed with his own feces as punishment, and the group abandons him with his mother, warning him not to mess with adults again.
Key relationships include his antagonism toward Noriaki Kakyoin, who deduces his scheme and defeats him, and his subordinate allegiance to DIO, though they do not interact directly. He also briefly fools Joseph Joestar and Polnareff into believing he is harmless. His role is that of a minor obstacle on the group's journey, notable for the unique threat he poses while asleep.
In terms of development, Mannish Boy undergoes no personal growth. His overconfidence is his downfall, and he is humiliated and abandoned after his defeat. His fate is left ambiguous; he is left in a city where his mother is supposedly nearby.
His notable ability is his Stand, Death Thirteen, which is named after the tarot card. Death Thirteen manifests as a clown-like figure wielding a scythe. It can only operate within the dream world, which it creates by pulling the consciousnesses of sleeping victims into a twisted nightmare realm. Inside this realm, Death Thirteen has absolute control over the environment and can attack at will. Crucially, victims cannot summon their own Stands while inside the dream unless they remain conscious while sleeping or have their Stand activated before falling asleep. The Stand cannot directly affect the real world, but injuries inflicted in the dream cause real pain and can lead to death if severe enough. After the victim wakes, all memories of the dream are erased, making it difficult to identify the source of the attacks. This ability makes Mannish Boy a particularly dangerous assassin, as his infant appearance and the amnesia effect allow him to operate without suspicion.
