Description
Hinata Momose is a senior pilot and a member of the elite Akai squad in the series Knights of Sidonia. Her background is that of a highly accomplished cadet, having been one of the top four students at the academy before graduating and becoming a professional Garde pilot long before the main events of the story begin. Her call sign is 002, which designates her as the second-highest-ranking pilot aboard the Sidonia, reflecting her elite status among the ship's defense force. During the hundred-year period of peace, she was considered one of the most skilled pilots on the entire ship, alongside her squadmates Mochikuni Akai, Kashiwade Aoki, and Izumo Midorikawa.
In terms of personality, Hinata Momose shows herself to be a kind and friendly individual. However, she is not particularly outgoing, as she tends to interact almost exclusively with her own team members and with the protagonist, Nagate Tanikaze. Her most defining personal characteristic is her deep romantic involvement with her squad leader, Mochikuni Akai, which serves as the primary motivation for her actions during her final battle. The two are seen spending time alone together, indicating a close and intimate relationship.
Her role in the story is a brief but critically important one, as her actions during the attack of Gauna 487 set the stage for Tanikaze's later rise. When her squad is dispatched to destroy this first Gauna to appear after the long peace, the mission goes tragically wrong. After her Garde’s leg is ensnared by the creature, Akai sacrifices himself to free her, leading to his own death at the hands of the Gauna. Emotionally compromised by the loss of her lover, Momose ignores the coordinated plan devised by her remaining squadmates. Driven by anguish and a desperate demand to get Akai back, she charges alone toward the Gauna, ruining the tactical plan. Her squadmates, bound by loyalty, are forced to abandon their strategy to save her, leading to their own deaths. Unbeknownst to them, Momose had already sustained fatal physical trauma and died from cardiopulmonary arrest caused by the impact of the attack. Her actions directly resulted in the total loss of her entire elite squad, as well as the loss of an invaluable Kabizashi spear.
Key relationships for Hinata Momose are almost entirely defined by her squad. Her romantic bond with Mochikuni Akai is the most significant, as his death is the trigger for her own downfall and the failure of the mission. She shares a professional and friendly bond with her other squadmates, Kashiwade Aoki and Izumo Midorikawa, who ultimately lose their lives trying to rescue her after her reckless charge. She also has some interaction with Nagate Tanikaze, though the nature of this relationship is less developed, primarily marking her as part of the small circle of veteran pilots who acknowledge him.
In terms of development, Momose has little opportunity to change or grow, as she meets her end in the early stages of the Gauna resurgence. Her narrative arc is that of a highly skilled, top-tier pilot whose abilities are ultimately rendered useless by her own human emotional vulnerability. Despite no one blaming her for the outcome, she is directly responsible for a catastrophic failure that costs Sidonia four of its best pilots and a powerful weapon. Her ability as a Garde pilot is considerable, as she is acknowledged as one of the top four elite pilots of her era. However, it is also made clear that even with her elite skills, she and her squad lacked the necessary cunning and experience to defeat a Gauna of this type, a task that the less experienced but more intuitive Tanikaze would later accomplish.
