Description
Kibito is a fictional character from the Dragon Ball Z Kai anime, serving as the dedicated attendant to Shin, the Supreme Kai of the East, also known as the Lord of Lords. His name is derived from the Japanese word tsukibito, which means attendant, a fitting title for his primary function within the cosmic hierarchy of Universe 7. As a Shinjin, the race of beings who govern the universe, Kibito has a distinctive appearance featuring long, white hair styled backward, pointed ears, and a broad, angular face. In the anime adaptation, he is depicted with pink or red-toned skin, which contrasts with his blue-skinned manga counterpart. He wears the traditional, formal attire of the Supreme Kais, though his uniform in the anime is often colored with a red coat, yellow accents, and an orange waist cloth, setting him apart from his master.

In terms of personality, Kibito is defined by his unwavering loyalty and faithfulness to Shin, whom he serves as a personal bodyguard and aide. He is generally a kind-hearted individual but possesses a notable distrust of mortals, a trait that becomes a central part of his character. This skepticism is particularly strong during his first encounters with the Earth's warriors, such as Gohan. He initially holds disdain for the idea of mortals stepping foot on the Sacred World of the Kais and is openly doubtful of the legendary powers of the Super Saiyans. Part of this attitude stems from a sense of jealousy regarding the immense, natural strength possessed by warriors like Gohan. Despite this prejudice, Kibito is not arrogant beyond reason. He remains true to his duties and, when proven wrong about a mortal's abilities, shows a willingness to admit his mistake and see their good qualities, a trait that distinguishes him from more malevolent godly characters. It is noted that he studies a great deal about Universe 7, yet his knowledge has limits, as he is unaware of all the races that inhabit it.

The background of Kibito is tied to the tragic history of the Supreme Kais. He originally served as an attendant to all the Supreme Kais, using his magical abilities to aid them. However, after the majority of the Supreme Kais were killed by the ancient monster Majin Buu, Kibito became the personal bodyguard and sole attendant to the surviving Eastern Supreme Kai, Shin.

Within the story of Dragon Ball Z Kai, Kibito first appears alongside Shin during the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament. Their mission is to prevent the resurrection of Majin Buu by the evil wizard Babidi. To accomplish this, Kibito participates in the tournament and is scheduled to fight Gohan. He deliberately provokes Gohan into transforming into a Super Saiyan, which serves as a trap to lure Babidi's minions, Yamu and Spopovich, into stealing Gohan's energy. After the attack, Kibito demonstrates one of his key abilities by using his healing powers to restore Gohan.

As the group tracks the energy thieves to Babidi's spaceship, Kibito is abruptly killed by the demon king Dabura, proving that his power is not on par with the primary villains of the saga. He is later revived on Earth using the Dragon Balls. Upon his return, he finds Shin severely injured, heals him, and assists in transporting Gohan to the Sacred World of the Kais. During their stay, Kibito doubts that Gohan can pull the legendary Z-Sword from its pedestal, but Gohan succeeds. When Gohan offers Kibito a chance to try, Kibito cannot lift the sword at all, highlighting the physical power gap between them. After the Elder Kai unlocks Gohan's hidden potential, Kibito uses his teleportation and magic materialization abilities to create a new fighting outfit for Gohan before they return to Earth.

The most significant development for Kibito occurs when the Elder Kai explains the power of the Potara earrings, which create a permanent fusion. Without fully grasping the permanence of the act, Kibito and Shin each take an earring and accidentally fuse together, becoming a single, new being known as Kibito Kai. This fusion has a personality more similar to Shin, and it possesses a combined set of abilities. In later series, such as Dragon Ball Super, Kibito and Shin are shown to have separated back into their original forms by using the Namekian Dragon Balls, a retcon that allows them to appear as distinct characters again.

Regarding his notable abilities, Kibito possesses several useful powers that make him an effective support character. He can fly using ki and has a healing ability that can close wounds and restore stamina. His most valuable skill is a form of instantaneous teleportation called Kai Kai, which allows him to travel instantly to any planet, place, or person without needing to sense a specific energy signature, a distinct advantage over Goku's Instant Transmission. He also demonstrates Magic Materialization, a power used to create physical objects, such as the clothes he made for Gohan. In terms of combat strength, guidebooks and character profiles state that Kibito's power level is considerably high. The Daizenshuu 7 guidebook notes that he is strong enough to give Gohan a difficult fight as long as the young Saiyan does not transform into a Super Saiyan. However, this is relative to the other characters in the series, as he is easily overpowered and killed by Dabura in a single attack and is physically incapable of lifting the Z-Sword, a feat that a non-Super Saiyan Gohan could accomplish with effort.
