Description
In Dragon Ball Z Kai, the character most commonly referred to as Kaioshin is the divine being known as Shin, the East Supreme Kai. He is one of the five Kaioshin who originally governed the living world and the Other World of the Seventh Universe. These beings hold the highest rank in the universe's divine hierarchy, serving as Gods of Creation. Their role is to create planets and foster life, maintaining a delicate cosmic balance with their counterparts, the Gods of Destruction. The Kaioshin are born as a rare and special type of deity from a golden fruit on a planet called Kaishin, and they reside in the Sacred World of the Kai, a realm separate from the afterlife. Shin originally served as the ruler of the eastern quadrant of the universe under the Grand Supreme Kai.

Shin's personality is marked by a distinct evolution throughout the events of Dragon Ball Z Kai. Initially, he is introduced with an air of mystery and authority, appearing calm, wise, and composed, which befits a supreme deity. However, as the story progresses, this facade gives way to a more fearful and anxious nature. He is often left in a state of shock and disbelief by the immense power displayed by the Earth's fighters, Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan, as their strength far exceeds his expectations and experience. Having lived through the horror of Majin Buu eons ago, he is deeply traumatized and carries a profound, almost paralyzing, fear of the monster's revival. This fear makes him extremely cautious and, at times, narrow-minded. He originally holds a very dogmatic, black-and-white view of good and evil, struggling to comprehend the Saiyans' desire for a challenging fight, which he sees as an irresponsible risk. Despite these flaws and his initial arrogance, he is genuinely dedicated to protecting the universe and possesses a humble side, often apologizing for his mistakes. He is also notably ignorant of many things common to Earth and the lower realms, such as the Dragon Balls, and is sometimes unaware of divine secrets even other gods know.

Shin's primary motivation is the preservation of the universe from any and all existential threats, specifically the resurrection of Majin Buu. His goal is a direct one: to stop the wizard Babidi from gathering the energy needed to revive the sleeping monster. He travels to Earth to recruit the strongest warriors for this mission, believing that their power is necessary for success. His role in the story is that of a guide and an advisor to the Z-Fighters. He provides crucial information about the otherworldly threats they face, including the nature of Buu, Babidi's spaceship, and the abilities of enemies like the Demon King Dabura. However, he quickly transitions from a confident leader to a secondary figure who must rely on the Saiyans' strength to solve the crisis he has been trying to prevent for millennia.

Key relationships define his actions. He shares a symbiotic link with the God of Destruction, Beerus, meaning if one dies, so does the other. He is constantly accompanied by his loyal attendant and bodyguard, Kibito, who serves as his healer and helps him in battle. He has a significant relationship with the Old Kaioshin, his elderly and perverted ancestor who was sealed in the Z-Sword. The Old Kaioshin, freed by Goku, becomes a mentor figure of sorts, possessing far greater wisdom and knowledge than Shin. Shin's most important relationship is with the Saiyans, particularly Goku. He is initially perplexed by their carefree attitude towards fighting but gradually comes to respect their judgment and power, learning from Goku that redemption is possible and that strength can come from unexpected places.

Shin undergoes a noticeable development arc. He begins as a formidable deity who paralyzes Gohan with a mere gesture, seemingly powerful and in control. His confidence is systematically shattered as he witnesses the Saiyans effortlessly defeat opponents he considered among the strongest in the universe. He is forced to confront his own relative weakness and his inability to directly combat the threats he is meant to manage. By the conclusion of the Buu saga, he has shed much of his initial arrogance and dogmatism, adopting a more humble and observant role. He learns to trust the warriors of Earth, acknowledging that their unique approach to battle can succeed where divine authority alone cannot.

As a deity, Shin possesses numerous notable abilities. He can use a unique form of teleportation called Instant Movement, which allows him to travel anywhere instantly without needing to sense a ki signature. He has the power to heal injuries, create physical objects from nothing, and telekinetically control matter. One of his more impressive feats is creating Katchin, said to be the hardest metal in the universe. He also demonstrates the ability to paralyze powerful fighters. Shin wears Potara earrings, which, when worn one on each ear by two individuals, fuse them into a single, far more powerful being. He accidentally uses these to merge with Kibito, becoming a fused entity called Kibito Kai. Despite his divine status, it is made clear that in terms of raw combat strength, he is far surpassed by the super-powered Saiyans and the resurrected Majin Buu.
