Description
Berthier is a member of the Black Moon Clan and one of the four Ayakashi Sisters, serving as a primary antagonist for a portion of the anime Sailor Moon R. She is the second youngest of the sisters and is specifically sent by her superior, Rubeus, to Earth on a mission to contaminate a future Crystal Point, a location of powerful energy. Her target is a building dedicated to the game of chess, which she selects as the site for her operation.

In appearance, Berthier is a young woman with long white hair often styled in a braid and distinctive blue eyes. She wears a blue, swimsuit-like uniform as part of her battle attire, complemented by blue gloves and boots, and bears the Black Moon symbol on her forehead. Her civilian disguise consists of elegant outfits, such as a red and black checkered sleeveless dress, which she wears when competing in public.

Personality wise, Berthier is initially presented as cold, intelligent, and highly competitive. She is a skilled strategist who firmly believes that winning is the most important aspect of any endeavor, a philosophy that makes her a natural foil for Sailor Mercury, Ami Mizuno. She often maintains a polite and elegant demeanor, but this masks a cruel and manipulative nature, as she has no qualms about using underhanded tactics or endangering innocent people to achieve her goals. Despite her villainous role, she displays a hidden depth of emotion, particularly regarding her family. Unlike her other sisters, she shows genuine distress when her younger sister, Koan, is purified and leaves the Black Moon Clan. This inner conflict reveals that her loyalty to her sisters is a significant, albeit suppressed, part of her character, and her harsh actions often serve as an overcompensation for these feelings of abandonment and loneliness.

Berthier's primary role in the story is as a direct adversary to Sailor Mercury. After a brief initial confrontation where Ami is forced to transform, revealing her identity, Berthier retreats and devises a more complex trap. She enters a public chess tournament specifically to challenge Ami, using a young girl from the future, Chibiusa, as a prize to lure her in. When Berthier loses the chess match fairly, she reveals her true intentions by trapping the other Sailor Guardians in a large sphere of ice. She then forces Ami into a deadly game of chess under her own rules: for every piece Ami loses, a part of her body will freeze solid. This scheme highlights Berthier's intelligence and her sadistic enjoyment of psychological warfare.

Her key relationships are central to her character arc. She is fiercely loyal to her sisters, Koan, Calaveras, and Petz, and their approval is a primary motivator for her actions. Conversely, she is a pawn of Rubeus, who views the sisters as disposable tools. Berthier does not share the romantic fascination with Rubeus that some of her sisters possess; her motivation is more about proving her worth and securing her place within the clan. Her most significant dynamic is with her opponent, Ami Mizuno. Berthier serves as a dark mirror to Ami, representing what the intelligent and solitary Ami could become if she prioritized victory over friendship and compassion.

Berthier undergoes a significant character development, transitioning from a villain to a reformed ally. Her turning point occurs after her plan is foiled by Tuxedo Mask. Expecting support, she is instead cruelly abandoned by her older sisters, Calaveras and Petz, who label her a failure. This betrayal sends Berthier into a deep despair, and she attempts a suicide attack, intending to freeze herself and the Sailor Guardians to death. It is at this moment that her purified sister, Koan, reaches out to her, offering love and acceptance. Koan's plea reminds Berthier that she is not alone and that she has a second chance. Overcome, Berthier allows Sailor Moon to use her healing powers to purify her, cleansing her of the Black Moon's evil influence. After her reformation, Berthier reconciles with all her sisters, and they open a cosmetics shop together in the 20th century. She retains her competitive and somewhat playful nature, but now directs it toward positive ends, happily teasing her older sister Petz for being grouchy.

In terms of notable abilities, Berthier is a powerful user of water and ice-based attacks. Her primary offensive technique is called Dark Water, which allows her to generate and manipulate freezing water into powerful streams or blizzards. Her most creative and dangerous ability is not a standard attack but a magical trap. Using her powers, she can create a sphere of ice to imprison her enemies and then enforce a rule-based game, such as chess, where physical consequences are tied to the game's outcome. She is also shown to have hypnotic abilities, which she uses to manipulate ordinary humans to serve her purposes. While she is a formidable strategist and magic user in her own right, her reliance on games and rules ultimately reflects her belief in a cold, calculated worldview, a flaw that the Sailor Guardians are able to overcome with the power of friendship and compassion.
