Description
Hodr, also known as Hodr Krishna IX, is the King of the Kingdom of Krisna and a central supporting character in the story. At 25 years old, he stands 193 cm tall. His history is deeply intertwined with the protagonist, Rygart Arrow, which began during their time together at the Assam Military School. Hodr first befriended Rygart when he ditched class to help him rescue an owl after spotting him from a window. During his school days, Hodr was known by the nickname Crowned Prince, a title earned for his habit of staring at the sky instead of paying attention in class, which led to consistently failing grades. Despite this lackluster academic performance, he formed a close and lasting friendship with Rygart, Sigyn Erster, and Zess, with the four of them becoming known as a group of troublemakers at the academy.

As a person, Hodr is defined by a profound reluctance to be king. He never desired the throne and only accepted the role out of duty, striving to be a good leader despite his personal misgivings. This sense of responsibility is strongly tied to his genuine care for his people; the lives of his citizens are a primary concern in his decision-making, particularly during the war with the Nation of Athens. His personality is marked by a quiet, observant nature, and he is portrayed as someone who suppresses his own desires for the sake of others.

The core of Hodr's motivation lies not in political ambition but in the protection of his kingdom and his loved ones. He works to navigate the political and military crisis facing Krisna, but his personal actions are largely driven by his complex relationship with his wife, Queen Sigyn Erster, and his best friend, Rygart. While married to Sigyn, he is fully aware that her heart belongs to Rygart. Hodr suppresses his own romantic feelings for her because he always believed that she and Rygart were meant for each other. This leads to his primary personal motivation: ensuring the happiness of those he cares about, even at the expense of his own. He later reveals that Sigyn has petitioned him for a divorce, and instead of fighting it, he scolds Rygart for not being honest about his own feelings for her, effectively trying to push them together.

Hodr’s role in the story is that of the besieged ruler. As the King and Supreme Commander of Krisna, he is responsible for leading the nation against the overwhelming military might of Athens. He is the one who summons Rygart to the capital, hoping that his old friend, as an Unsorcerer, might be the key to piloting an ancient, unusable Golem, the Delphine. This act sets the entire plot in motion. His strategic position forces him to make difficult choices between surrender, which would save lives but result in the execution of the royal family, and fighting a seemingly hopeless war. He often serves as the calm, pragmatic counterpoint to the more emotional and impulsive Rygart, while also being the source of much of the story's underlying personal drama.

Key relationships define Hodr. His friendship with Rygart Arrow is built on mutual respect and history, but is strained by their unspoken love triangle with Sigyn. Hodr acts as a moral support and sometimes a stern critic for Rygart, trying to push him to confront his own feelings. His relationship with Sigyn Erster is a marriage of convenience that he entered knowing it was one-sided. He shows her no overt romantic affection, not out of cruelty, but as a way to create distance, respecting her true feelings for Rygart. This lack of closeness is so apparent that the two are known to sleep in separate chambers. In truth, he still loves her but suppresses it, and his offer of a divorce is a final act of that self-sacrificing love. He also has a younger sister named Lindy, who is married to a general from the Empire of Orlando.

Throughout the story, Hodr undergoes significant development. He begins as a reluctant king who feels trapped by his fate and the expectations placed upon him. As the war progresses, he grows into a more decisive and capable leader, shouldering the immense burden of his role. His personal development is most evident in his emotional arc. He transitions from quietly accepting a loveless marriage to actively orchestrating a divorce, finally being honest about the situation for the sake of his wife and his friend. His actions reveal a man who, though initially passive about his own happiness, ultimately takes agency to resolve the emotional entanglement that has defined his adult life.

In terms of notable abilities, Hodr's strengths are not on the battlefield. He is not a Golem pilot or a frontline soldier like Rygart or Zess. Instead, his abilities lie in leadership, strategy, and diplomacy. As the Supreme Commander of Krisna, he is responsible for overseeing the kingdom's military operations and making high-level command decisions. His true power is his political acumen and his unwavering resolve to protect his nation and his people from destruction.
