Description
Ibara Shiozaki is a first-year student in the Hero Course at U.A. High School, belonging to Class 1-B and hailing from Kanagawa Prefecture. Born on September 8, she is 167 centimeters tall, making her the tallest female student in her class. She achieved fourth place in the U.A. High School entrance exam's practical portion, a strong indicator of her natural talent.
Shiozaki is perhaps most recognizable by her unique appearance; she has long, green, thorny vines that grow from her head in place of regular hair. She often styles these vines in a way that suggests a crown of thorns. Her hero costume initially consists of a plain, Ancient Roman-style toga and knee-high boots, a design she admits prioritizes appearance over function. In colder weather, she wraps herself in her own vines for warmth.
Her personality is as distinctive as her appearance. Shiozaki is deeply religious and maintains a saint-like demeanor, always speaking politely and honestly. She frequently thanks God in conversation and is a person of strong faith who abhors deceit. This commitment to honesty was evident during the U.A. Sports Festival, where she objected to the commentator Present Mic calling her an "assassin," clarifying that she seeks only to spread good and achieve victory, not to kill. She believes in fair play and was uncomfortable when her team gained an advantage in an unsportsmanlike way during the Cavalry Battle. Her speech is often dramatic and laden with biblical or religious imagery, referring to opponents as the "beast of the apocalypse".
Shiozaki's motivation is to become a hero who embodies her faith and spreads goodness. As a Hero Course student, she participates in all of U.A.'s major events. At the Sports Festival, she placed fourth in the obstacle race. After advancing to the final tournament, she won her first match against Denki Kaminari from Class 1-A, her vines easily blocking and restraining him due to their natural non-conductive property. She was eliminated in her second match by Tenya Iida, who used his incredible speed, Recipro Burst, to push her out of the ring before she could react. During the summer training camp, she was incapacitated by the villain Mustard's sleep gas.
In the Joint Training Battle between Class 1-A and Class 1-B, Shiozaki was a key fighter for her team. She used her vines for wide-area reconnaissance and capture, even managing to restrain the physically powerful Eijiro Kirishima. However, her team lost when she was tricked by Hitoshi Shinsou, whose Brainwashing Quirk was able to activate when Shiozaki unknowingly responded to him mimicking a teammate's voice. After the match, her homeroom teacher, Sekijiro Kan, noted that her team had failed to account for her honest personality, which made her vulnerable to such deception. For her winter internship, she trained under the professional hero team the Lurkers, alongside Kaminari and others, learning from plant-based hero Suneater, whom she respects.
Her Quirk, named Vine, allows her to freely control the thorny vines that grow from her head. She can extend, retract, and manipulate them for various purposes, including attacking, restraining enemies, and creating defensive barriers. Because her vines are plant-based, they do not conduct electricity, giving her a significant advantage against opponents like Kaminari. The vines can be cut off from her head and will regenerate with enough water and sunlight. Shiozaki has developed several named techniques that reflect her religious faith: Via Dolorosa, which spreads vines across an area to ensnare enemies; Crucifixion, which binds a captured target with multiple layers of vines; and Faith's Shield, which weaves the vines into a thick wall for protection.
