Description
Katsuto Jūmonji is the heir and eventual head of the Jūmonji family, one of the Ten Master Clans that govern Japan's magical society. As the eldest son of the family, he was subjected to strict training from a young age to prepare him for leadership, a process that began when he was only three years old. His mother died when he was three, and his father later remarried in an arrangement made by his grandfather. Due to his rigorous upbringing, which was focused on honing his abilities and sense of duty, he did not have much of a chance to look after his younger siblings. By 2097, he officially inherited the position of clan head from his father, who was suffering from a decline in magical power due to illness. The Jūmonji family is known as the "Iron Wall" and is responsible for protecting the capital region, with their motto being "One against a Thousand".

Physically, Katsuto is an imposing figure, standing approximately 185 centimeters tall with a thick chest, broad shoulders, and a heavily muscular build that is visible even through his uniform, giving him a heavy sense of presence. In terms of personality, he is largely reserved and passive, typically speaking only when necessary, but he carries the dignity and composure befitting a future clan head. He is defined by a strong sense of responsibility, dependability, and a matter-of-fact demeanor, making him honorable and no-nonsense. Tatsuya Shiba once observed that he has a forceful personality, one that would not bar his subordinates from fighting. Unlike some members of the magical elite, he does not discriminate against "Weeds," or second-course students, a trait evident when he supported Tatsuya's role as an engineer for the Nine Schools Competition and later reasoned with him to represent the school in the Monolith Code. He is considered the most virtuous and compassionate among the "Big Three" of First High School, alongside Mayumi Saegusa and Mari Watanabe, and he contemplates the conflict between first and second course students, seeking harmony. He has a somewhat airheaded side that can occasionally lead to unintentionally comedic moments.

Katsuto's primary motivation is the fulfillment of his duties as a protector of the Jūmonji legacy and, by extension, Japan's magical order. He upholds the family's doctrine of strength and responsibility, intervening to protect the Ten Master Clans' reputation and stability. He believes in following through on one's responsibilities and expects the same level of commitment from others, which is why he initially disapproved of Tatsuya trying to find a way out of a competition, advising him to stop making excuses based on being surrounded by the weak.

Within the story, Katsuto serves as a powerful ally and a formidable benchmark of strength. He is the chairman of the Extracurricular Activities Federation at First High School, putting him in charge of all club activities. Alongside Mayumi Saegusa and Mari Watanabe, he forms the "Triumvirate" or "Big Three," the most powerful and influential students at the school. In this role, he is often called upon to mediate disputes and uphold school rules, as seen when he presided over a hearing regarding a fight between the kendo and kenjutsu clubs. He has a healthy rivalry with Mayumi Saegusa, and while they compete, they maintain a relationship of mutual respect. He works frequently with Mari Watanabe as well. He views Tatsuya Shiba as a rival and recognizes his capabilities, even referring to Miyuki not by name but as the "Next Head of the Yotsuba," indicating his acute political awareness. He also has connections with magicians from the Tsuji family, though he finds it difficult to deal with Tsukasa Kinoe due to his complete lack of consideration for others' feelings.

Katsuto undergoes significant development as he transitions from heir to acting clan head, and finally to official clan head. Due to his father's failing health, he was effectively managing family affairs even before formally inheriting the position on February 4, 2097. It was at the clan meeting where he officially became head that he learned of the existence of his half-sister, Arisa, whom he later decided to adopt in order to protect her from the dangers associated with the Overclock ability that magicians in the family possess. After graduating from the National Magic University, which he attended as a university student starting in 2096, he takes on a role as an executive in the family's civil engineering company, demonstrating his continued commitment to the clan's affairs beyond his school years.

Katsuto's notable abilities are almost entirely defensive in nature, earning his family the title "Iron Wall." His signature magic is Phalanx, a Move-Type Defensive Magic that creates multiple layered barriers that continuously refresh and replace themselves, similar to a dense formation of heavy infantry. The upper limit of barriers he can create is nine hundred ninety-nine. While primarily defensive, Phalanx has offensive applications, as he can send dozens of barriers crashing into an enemy at high speeds, combining anti-personnel, anti-object, and anti-magic properties. The barriers are impermeable to gas and can resist temperatures exceeding 20,000°C. He also possesses Reflector, an Area Of Effect magic that reverses motion vectors, and Psion Wall, which places a dense wall of psions around himself that reconstructs and becomes stronger each time it is destroyed. Using his Spatial Awareness, honed by the Jūmonji family, he is sensitive to changes in spatial distribution, allowing him to read "meaning" in a way similar to Tatsuya's Elemental Sight and assess the magical talent of others. A defining but dangerous ability is Overclocking, a special technique that raises the activity of his magic calculation area to temporarily surpass his potential, ensuring victory at the cost of shortening his life as a magician. He is capable of casting difficult defensive Area of Effect Magics from four hundred meters away.
