Description
Kenji Kazama is the main protagonist of the comedy series D-Frag!. He is a second-year student at Fujou High School who is widely known as a delinquent and the leader of the "Kazama gang," a small group of friends. Despite his rough reputation and spiky appearance, Kenji is arguably the most sensible and grounded character in his school, constantly finding himself as the lone voice of reason surrounded by eccentric personalities.
In terms of background, Kenji was not always a model student. During elementary school, he grew tired of what he saw as an absurd world and gradually developed a rebellious streak, becoming a delinquent almost without realizing it. A formative event occurred when his gang’s hideout on a department store roof caught fire. They were saved by a teacher named Shawn Konekone, who instructed them to protect and help the innocent as a way of repaying the debt. This incident profoundly shaped Kenji’s personal code of honor. While he aspires to conquer the school and become its strongest student, he is not a malicious person; he refuses to hit girls and has a strong sense of moral obligation to help those in need.
Kenji's personality is defined by a sharp contrast between his threatening exterior and his fundamentally kind and honorable nature. He is loud, boisterous, and easily provoked, but he is also surprisingly considerate. His most prominent trait is his mastery of tsukkomi, the comedic role of the straight man who points out absurdity. He possesses the ability to deliver rapid-fire retorts, sometimes even commenting on the unspoken thoughts of others. While he is extremely competitive and ambitious about his goal of being the strongest, he finds himself repeatedly outmatched, particularly by the girls he encounters, which often leaves him frustrated. When direct physical confrontation fails, Kenji relies on his quick wits, often devising tricky and underhanded strategies to win. He is also generally studious enough to avoid failing grades, a fact that sometimes surprises those who judge him by his appearance.
Kenji's role in the story is set in motion when he and his gang attempt to raid the Game Creation Club to boost their popularity. However, he inadvertently helps the club’s members put out a fire and is subsequently forced to join them to prevent the club's dissolution. This marks his entry as the sole "normal" member of the club, which is populated by girls who each claim to have elemental affinities. Throughout the series, Kenji acts as the anchor for the chaotic narrative, his common-sense reactions serving as the primary source of humor.
Kenji’s relationships with the other characters are central to the series. Within the Game Creation Club, he is frequently exasperated by the president, Roka Shibasaki, who claims a fire or darkness attribute and whose strange antics he is constantly forced to react to. Despite his annoyance, he has a deep respect for her and will fiercely defend her. He has a turbulent relationship with Chitose Karasuyama, the student council president with an earth attribute, who often physically abuses him, leading to constant bickering. With Sakura Mizukami, the water attribute user, he is often baffled by her mysterious behavior, especially when she claims to be his little sister. Outside the club, Kenji develops a significant relationship with Takao, the leader of the rival "Real" Game Creation Club. Initially antagonistic, their relationship warms as she develops a crush on him, though Kenji remains largely oblivious to the romantic feelings he inspires in several girls, including Roka, Takao, and the shy classmate Funabori. At home, he has a generally caring relationship with his younger sister, Noe Kazama, who shares his spiky hair and serious personality.
Throughout the series, Kenji shows subtle development. While he initially tries to escape the club and return to his life as a feared delinquent, he eventually accepts his role and forms strong bonds with its members. His childhood debt to Mr. Konekone continues to motivate his actions, reinforcing his honorable streak. His journey to become the school's strongest also evolves as he grudgingly acknowledges that the real powerhouses are the girls around him, forcing him to find creative ways to compete.
Kenji’s most notable ability is his unparalleled tsukkomi, or "tackle" skills, which he uses to verbally cut through the nonsense created by his peers. He also possesses surprising strategic intelligence, often turning the tables in competitions by abandoning conventional tactics for clever, albeit sometimes cheap, methods. Beyond these, his incredibly spiky hair is a running gag; it is so rigid that it cannot be flattened by a meteorite, making it a distinct and defining physical characteristic.
