Description
Charlemagne serves as a member of the Round Table, the ruling council of the Western Planet under King Arthur. He is a warrior who wields a wind-elemental Regalia, a powerful artifact that allows him to pilot a Giant War Armor and control atmospheric forces. His appearance is marked by his white hair and purple eyes.
The most defining aspect of Charlemagne's personality is his intense devotion to his fellow knight and commander, Hannibal. His feelings go beyond simple loyalty or camaraderie; he holds a deep sense of admiration for her that borders on worship. This is consistently demonstrated through his deferential manner, as he frequently responds to Hannibal's commands or ideas with the phrase Oui mon empress, a respectful acknowledgment of her authority. His entire motivation as a character is centered on serving and protecting her.
His primary role in the story occurs during a coordinated assault on the Eastern Planet. Charlemagne arrives in the domain of Oda Nobunaga alongside Hannibal, tasked with seizing the powerful Regalia for King Arthur. In this mission, Charlemagne and Hannibal demonstrate a potent strategic synergy. Charlemagne uses his wind-based powers in tandem with Hannibal's water-based abilities to create a massive ice field, freezing a lake and the surrounding land to gain a tactical advantage over their enemies. This devastating tactic allows them to threaten the civilian population, which they use as leverage to demand the surrender of the Eastern Regalia.
His key relationship with Hannibal dictates his every action. When their assault is interrupted, first by the arrival of the turncoat general Gaius Julius Caesar and then by the fearsome warrior Uesugi Kenshin, the tide of the battle turns against them. Despite being outmatched, Charlemagne's motivation remains singular: to ensure Hannibal's survival. As the situation becomes hopeless, he makes the ultimate sacrifice, using the last of his wind Regalia's power not to attack his foes, but to create a portal or a powerful gust to send Hannibal back to the safety of the Western Planet. This act of self-sacrifice costs him his life, as he is left defenseless and is fatally struck down by Uesugi Kenshin.
Charlemagne's development, though brief, is tragic. He is not a character who changes over time, but one whose established traits are pushed to their logical and fatal conclusion. He begins as a devoted knight and ends as a martyr, dying for the person he reveres. Even in death, his sacrifice proves to be in vain. After he falls, his commander Hannibal is almost immediately killed by another member of their own Round Table, Cesare Borgia, who betrays and assassinates her. In terms of his notable abilities, his combat prowess is centered on the manipulation of wind. He can use this element offensively to attack his enemies, but his most significant feat is combining his power with Hannibal's to alter the weather itself, creating an ice-based battlefield.
