Description
Isanami is the central female protagonist, introduced as a young shrine maiden from the Izumo Grand Shrine. She has a distinct appearance characterized by her long, light blue hair often tied up, and she wears a traditional white and blue kimono-style outfit. A notable feature is the powerful hairpin she always keeps in her hair, which is revealed to be a charm called Kushimitama.
Found as an abandoned baby beneath the torii gate of the Izumo Grand Shrine, Isanami was raised by the shrine's head priest. Her life is shattered when her temple is attacked and burned, resulting in the massacre of everyone close to her, forcing her to flee for her life. She is rescued from her pursuers by a wandering ninja named Saizo Kirigakure, to whom she becomes deeply attached. Following her rescue, she follows Saizo to Ueda Castle to seek the aid of the lord, Yukimura Sanada, and it is there she becomes involved in the gathering of the ten brave warriors.
In terms of personality, Isanami initially presents a very optimistic, cheerful, and somewhat naive demeanor. Having spent most of her life secluded within the shrine, she knows very little of the outside world and its cruelties. This innocence often makes her a burden in dangerous situations, as she lacks combat skill and requires protection from others. She has a notable appetite, with a particular fondness for soba noodles and sweets, and is often teased for her slender figure, which causes her some insecurity, especially when compared to more buxom women. Despite her general positivity, she harbors a deep-seated fear of being left alone, which fuels her desire to stay close to those who have shown her kindness, especially Saizo.
As the story progresses, a much deeper and darker layer to her character is uncovered. It is revealed that Isanami is no ordinary priestess; the hairpin she wears does not grant her power but rather acts as a seal to restrain it. Her true identity is that of the goddess Izanami, a deity associated with death, slaughter, and the underworld. This hidden nature gives her a strong connection to the emotions of those around her, and when she is pushed into a corner or experiences intense emotional distress, she can unleash a devastating wave of dark energy. The tension of her character arc revolves around her struggle against this inherent nature, as she wishes to protect her friends rather than become a danger to them. Her resolve to become stronger and no longer be a burden is a key motivation, a decision that leads her to eventually discard her sealing hairpin to access her divine power.
Her most significant relationship is with Saizo Kirigakure, the man who saved her. She views him as her protector and a source of light, often clinging to him and showing a jealous streak when other women, such as the ninja Anastasia, get close to him. Saizo, in turn, becomes her anchor to humanity, keeping her darkness in check. She also forms bonds with Lord Yukimura Sanada, who accepts her into his group despite the danger she represents, and with other members of the Brave10. A pivotal moment in her development is the betrayal by Anastasia, a woman she viewed as a cool older sister figure; this betrayal deepens her despair and pushes her closer to accepting her true power.
Isanami's most notable ability is her connection to the divine power of Izanami. Normally suppressed by her hairpin, this power manifests as a potent force of darkness that can annihilate everything in her vicinity. Her emotions, particularly fear, sadness, and a desire to protect, can trigger this ability. Beyond this supernatural power, she is also shown to be capable of learning other skills, such as dancing with combat fans. Her journey sees her transform from a helpless, naive girl into a being of tremendous, albeit terrifying, power, one who must ultimately reconcile her kind heart with her identity as the goddess of slaughter.
