Description
Hazama is a complex antagonist from BlazBlue Alter Memory, introduced as a calm and unassuming Captain in the Intelligence Department of the Novus Orbis Librarium. His physique is tall and lean, standing at 183 centimeters and weighing 61 kilograms, with bright green hair and amber eyes that are almost always depicted as closed shut over a perpetual, serene smile. This outwardly harmless and friendly demeanor is a complete fabrication, serving as a perfect facade for a deeply cruel and manipulative nature. He typically wears a long green dress coat over a black suit with a fedora, a look that complements his elusive and shady personality. He prefers to avoid open conflict, often claiming a lack of proficiency in combat, and uses humble, polite language to get close to others and lower their defenses.

Despite his calm exterior, Hazama is a sadist who takes genuine pleasure in the psychological and physical torment of others. He is a master manipulator, deriving enjoyment from breaking down individuals by exposing their traumas, twisting their beliefs, and forcing them into despair. His motivations are inherently self-serving; his primary desire is not power in a traditional sense, but rather the ability to feel genuine pain. As an artificial being created as a vessel for the malicious entity Yuuki Terumi, Hazama lacks many normal human sensations, and he inflicts suffering upon others in a desperate, often violent attempt to experience something real for himself. His cruelty is an inherent trait, and he will use any means necessary, including torture and murder, to achieve his goals or simply for his own amusement.

Within the narrative of Alter Memory, Hazama serves as a primary orchestrator of chaos. He poses as a helpful supervisor to Noel Vermillion, all while manipulating events from the shadows to further the plans of Terumi. He is directly responsible for some of the most traumatic events in the lives of the main characters, including the destruction of Ragna the Bloodedge's childhood home and the severing of Ragna's arm. His key relationships are defined by exploitation. He views Noel as a tool to be converted into the powerful Murakumo Unit, Mu-12, and takes great pleasure in tormenting her friend Makoto Nanaya to trigger Noel's emotional collapse. He also manipulates Tsubaki Yayoi, twisting her sense of duty and jealousy to turn her against her closest friends. His relationship with Yuuki Terumi is unique; Hazama was created specifically to be Terumi's vessel, and the two share a body, often switching between personalities. While they are separate entities, their goals are largely aligned in the pursuit of chaos.

Throughout the series, Hazama shows a notable lack of conventional character development, as his true nature is gradually revealed rather than changed. He begins as a seemingly harmless bureaucrat and is exposed as one of the central villains. His primary form of progression is his eventual separation from Yuuki Terumi, which allows him to pursue his own desires for sensation independent of his creator's influence. Even after this separation, he remains a ruthless and calculating threat, continuing his experiments in cruelty to understand his own existence.

Hazama is a formidable fighter, wielding the Nox Nyctores known as Geminus Anguium: Ouroboros. This weapon takes the form of a chain with a snake-headed bite, which he can use to strike opponents from a distance, bind them, or swing himself across the battlefield with incredible agility. His fighting style is swift and deceptive, utilizing hidden knives and powerful kicks to complement his chain attacks. When Yuuki Terumi assumes control of his body, his appearance shifts; his hair spikes up and his eyes open to reveal snake-like golden irises. In this state, his fighting style becomes significantly more aggressive and brutal. Among his more unusual traits, he has a strong fondness for boiled eggs and suffers from a notable dislike of cats due to severe allergies.
