Description
Ragna the Bloodedge is the central protagonist of BlazBlue Alter Memory, a wanted outlaw known throughout the world as the Grim Reaper. He carries the largest bounty ever placed by the Novus Orbis Librarium, the dominant world organization he opposes, after destroying many of its branches and killing two artificial beings modeled after his sister Saya. His stated aim is to bring down the Librarium and destroy its cauldrons, though the true roots of his crusade lie in his traumatic childhood and his desire to confront the man responsible for ruining his life.

Ragna's background is defined by experimentation and loss. As a child, he and his younger siblings Jin and Saya were found in the workshop of Relius Clover, where they had been subjected to human experimentation. The legendary swordsman Jubei rescued the three children and entrusted them to Celica A. Mercury, and Ragna later spent much of his adolescence training under Jubei. His original right arm was severed by Yuuki Terumi, who acted while controlling Jin's mind. Ragna was saved by the vampire Rachel Alucard, who gave him a new arm tied to a powerful artifact called the Azure Grimoire. His resurrection also changed his body, leaving him with one red eye and white hair.

In personality, Ragna is abrasive, sarcastic, blunt, and quick to anger. He speaks roughly, uses vulgar language freely, and often behaves like a stereotypical delinquent, showing little patience for authority or pleasantries. Beneath this harsh exterior, however, he is fiercely loyal and protective of those he cares about, and he carries a strong sense of justice shaped by his own suffering. His rough manners mask a good-hearted nature, and he is known to be surprisingly capable in quiet domestic matters, such as cooking.

Ragna's motivations are rooted in revenge and a desire to protect others from the same pain he experienced. His fight against the Novus Orbis Librarium is driven by his hatred of the forces that manipulated his family and by his wish to destroy the source of his suffering. He also develops a protective role toward Noel Vermillion, a young woman who comes to resemble his lost sister, and he cares for her much as he once cared for Saya.

His key relationships define much of his arc. Jin Kisaragi is his biological brother, and their rivalry stems from the tragic incident involving their sister Saya, who is presumed dead. The complicated bond between the two brothers is central to the story. Rachel Alucard acts as an enigmatic benefactor who has repeatedly saved his life, while Jubei serves as a fatherlike mentor figure from his youth. Ragna's confrontation with Yuuki Terumi gives his quest a personal focus, as Terumi is the man most responsible for the destruction of his family.

Over the course of the story, Ragna develops from a lone, angry avenger into someone willing to take responsibility for others. His time with Noel and his clashes with old allies and enemies push him to confront his own hatred and open up to the possibility of trust and connection. While he remains rough around the edges, his underlying compassion becomes increasingly visible as the conflict escalates.

In terms of abilities, Ragna is an exceptionally powerful fighter. He wields the Azure Grimoire, an Armagus device that grants him devastating strength, and fights with the large sword known as Aramasa, or the Blood-Scythe. His Drive ability, called Soul Eater, allows him to absorb the life force of his opponents, healing himself while damaging them. Because he is an artificial human, his body can resist the Azure Grimoire's corrupting influence, and he possesses an accelerated healing factor that lets him survive wounds that would kill an ordinary person. His combat training under Jubei, combined with his raw power, makes him capable of overwhelming entire squads of Librarium soldiers on his own.
