Description
Harutora Tsuchimikado is the main protagonist of the first major story arc. He is born into the branch family of the prestigious Tsuchimikado clan, a lineage of onmyouji descended from the legendary Abe no Seimei. Despite this distinguished heritage, Harutora is initially unable to sense or see spirit energy, a fundamental skill for any onmyouji, and is considered to have no magical powers. Because he lacks this talent, he has given up on becoming an onmyouji and is content to live a quiet, normal life with his friends, not feeling any obligation to follow his family's traditions.
Harutora's personality is defined by his kindness and friendly attitude, which naturally draws people toward him. He can be rather stubborn when it comes to his personal beliefs, as seen in his initial refusal to embrace his family's legacy. A prominent trait is his notable obliviousness, particularly towards the romantic feelings that several girls develop for him. He is also extremely weak academically, often requiring tutoring to avoid being held back, and seems to be plagued by an unusual amount of "bad luck," a string of minor misfortunes he jokes might be an ancient curse. This luck leads to him being nicknamed "Baka-tora". Despite his low grades, his close friends include Touji, an ex-delinquent, and Hokuto, a girl who is secretly a shikigami.
The central motivation driving Harutora is a promise he made as a child to his cousin, Natsume Tsuchimikado. Seeing that she was afraid of spirits, he vowed to become her shikigami and protect her. For years, this promise remained unfulfilled, but after a tragic incident in which his friend Hokuto is killed protecting him, Harutora finally decides to act. To honor his childhood vow and find Hokuto's true master, he has Natsume perform the ritual to make him her shikigami, which gives him a visible five-pointed star mark on his face. Shortly after, he transfers to the Onmyo Academy in Tokyo, the school Natsume attends, in order to stay by her side.
Throughout the story, Harutora's role evolves significantly. He begins as a seemingly powerless individual but enters the magical world as a shikigami, a protective familiar, for another practitioner. His key relationships include his bond with Natsume, who serves as both his master and childhood friend, and he is often mistaken for being the heir to the Tsuchimikado family. He is later revealed to be the true reincarnation of the legendary and revolutionary onmyouji, Yakou Tsuchimikado. It is explained that at birth, he and Natsume's places were switched, with Natsume being raised as the heir to act as a decoy to protect his true identity. This revelation marks a major turning point in his development.
Harutora's development from an ordinary person to a figure of immense importance is dramatic. After awakening as Yakou's reincarnation, he undergoes a profound personality shift, becoming more mature, intelligent, and patient. While he still retains much of his original personality, he gains the immense knowledge and stoic demeanor of his past life. His story culminates in a desperate act of love and magic: when Natsume is killed, he uses his regained memories and power to perform the forbidden Taizan Fukun ritual, successfully reviving her.
In terms of notable abilities, Harutora begins with basically none, but his latent potential is immense. Even before he can use magic, he possesses a vast reservoir of spiritual power that often causes magical items to malfunction or overheat. After becoming Natsume's shikigami, he gains the ability to see spirits. He wields a khakkara, a sacred staff, given to him by his teacher Jin Ohtomo, which helps him convert his raw power into usable magic. His most iconic tool is the Raven Coat, a magical coat that functions as an empathic shikigami. It grants him various abilities, including the power to fly, transform into a raven, and defend against both physical and magical attacks. After his awakening, his skills become those of the legendary Yakou, placing him at the pinnacle of magical ability with mastery over advanced, high-level spells.
