Description
Ibara Naruse is the main protagonist of the story and a third-year student at the Special Engineering School of the 3rd Division of the Ground Self-Defense Force, where she serves as the head of the health department and is the leader of the Coppelion Rescue Unit. She is a member of the Coppelion, a group of genetically engineered individuals created to operate in highly radioactive environments. Her production code is C-2, indicating she was the second Coppelion created.
Physically, Ibara stands 162 centimeters tall and has a slim build with black shoulder-length hair and hazel eyes. She typically wears her school uniform with the jacket tied around her waist, and a flower is often attached to her uniform.
Ibara is characterized by her kind-hearted, bright, and brave nature, often described as a classic protagonist with a strong moral compass. She is handy, smart, and consistently calm, with a tendency to encourage those around her. Her most defining trait is her unwavering belief in non-killing; she refuses to harm anyone regardless of the circumstances and is determined to save every survivor she encounters in the former capital. This compassionate attitude has led to her being called an angel by those she rescues, including members of the otherwise harsh 1st Division. She speaks with a Kansai dialect. Despite her outward strength and optimism, her personality was shaped by camaraderie and personal beliefs, and she is noted to have a fragile side, having been in a constant daze during her childhood. She views the former capital as her home and feels great sadness when people refuse her help. She once broke the rules by using a restricted drug to help people, and when reprimanded by the vice principal, she pointed her gun at him and demanded he produce more of the medication.
As a Coppelion, Ibara possesses significantly enhanced physical abilities, including superhuman strength estimated at ten times that of a normal human being. She also has a powerful regenerative healing factor, which is notably higher than most other Coppelions. Minor wounds, such as bullet grazes, heal within minutes, and with assistance from Haruto Kurosawa's blood, she can recover from critical injuries like tank shell wounds or a broken arm within a single night. She is a highly skilled combatant, proficient in hand-to-hand fighting and an expert marksman who is ambidextrous with firearms. Her primary weapon is a customized pistol derived from a Luger design that can load various types of ammunition, including anesthetic darts and radiation suppressants known as Aether, which contains a genetic serum to keep survivors alive until rescue arrives. She has also been shown using a Type-91 Man-Portable Surface-to-Air Missile, called a Hand Arrow.
Ibara shares a deep and longstanding bond with Haruto Kurosawa, as they were the first two Coppelions created and have known each other since childhood; they are close friends who constantly look out for and protect one another, and it is implied that they have romantic feelings for each other. She is a respected senior and close friend to her teammates Aoi Fukasaku and Taeko Nomura, holding a particularly protective and sisterly affection for Aoi, whom she shielded from bullying at school. She initially faces hostility from the Ozu sisters, Kanon and Shion, but remains determined to save them even as they attempt to kill her. She also refuses to team up with her creator, Dr. Coppelius, rejecting his plans and refusing to see herself merely as his tool or a doll.
Throughout the story, Ibara remains the steadfast leader of her unit, driven by her purpose to save the people trapped in the irradiated capital. Her character is tested as she faces tremendous danger and loss, such as when she is deeply saddened by the apparent death of Haruto, only to rally with encouragement from Aoi. She continues to rescue survivors, protect her team, and uphold her principle of non-violence against various threats, including members of the 1st Division. By the end of the narrative, she becomes fully human due to an antidote administered by Haruto, losing her radiation resistance and superhuman abilities. She is moved out of Tokyo for her safety and lives among the survivors she saved, though she feels great loneliness being separated from her friends. She eventually reunites with Haruto and her comrades in a poignant moment, donning a protective suit to see them again.
