Description
Keel Lorenz is the enigmatic and authoritative chairman of the secret organization SEELE and the head of the Human Instrumentality Committee. He appears as an elderly man whose body, with the exception of his head and spine, has been largely replaced by cybernetic implants, and he wears a distinctive visor over his eyes. His earliest known activities date back to before the Second Impact, in which he was involved in covering up the true nature of the disaster alongside Gendo Ikari. Through SEELE, he has secretly guided the creation of the Evangelion project and the development of NERV, all while manipulating world governments from behind the scenes.

Lorenz is a calculating, patient, and deeply ideological figure. He believes that humanity is a flawed species and that the only path to salvation is the Human Instrumentality Project—a plan to merge all human souls into a single, collective consciousness, thereby eliminating the suffering caused by individual existence. His interpretation of the Dead Sea Scrolls leads him to believe that the Angels must be defeated to prepare for this transformation. He views the Evangelions and their pilots as tools to be used and discarded in service of this grand design.

His relationship with Gendo Ikari is one of uneasy partnership and eventual conflict. Initially, Lorenz trusts Gendo to execute SEELE’s scenario, but he grows suspicious of Gendo’s hidden agenda—specifically, Gendo’s desire to reunite with his wife Yui through the Instrumentality in his own way. As Gendo begins to deviate from SEELE’s plan, Lorenz moves to strip him of control. In The End of Evangelion, Lorenz orders a military assault on NERV headquarters, leading to the deaths of numerous staff and the destruction of the facility. He intends to force the Third Impact under SEELE’s terms.

During the final stages of Instrumentality, Lorenz and the other SEELE members appear as floating monoliths. As the process unfolds, the organic parts of his body dissolve into LCL, leaving behind only the mechanical components of his cybernetic frame—a stark symbol of his loss of humanity. Despite his immense political power and careful orchestration of events, he ultimately fails to control the outcome, as Gendo’s betrayal and Shinji Ikari’s choices lead to a very different form of Instrumentality. Lorenz’s role is that of a puppet master who becomes a victim of his own scheme, representing the cold, inhuman logic of a system that seeks to erase individuality for a supposed higher purpose. His abilities are not supernatural but derive from his influence over global institutions, his access to classified knowledge, and his willingness to sacrifice anyone—including himself—to achieve his vision.
