Description
Hanji Zoë is a prominent member of the Survey Corps, initially serving as a squad leader before eventually becoming the fourteenth commander of the corps following the death of Erwin Smith. Standing 170 centimeters tall, Hanji has a tall, slender, and somewhat androgynous appearance with medium-length dark brown hair, often tied up in a messy ponytail, and light brown eyes behind a pair of glasses. The character's gender is intentionally ambiguous, as the original author stated that it is best not to be specified, a detail that is maintained throughout the original manga.

Driven by an insatiable and passionate curiosity, Hanji is the Survey Corps' foremost scientific mind and a self-described research enthusiast, responsible for most of the advancements in humanity's understanding of Titans. This passion was ignited during an early mission when Hanji kicked the head off a three-meter-class Titan and was shocked to discover it was abnormally light, leading to a fundamental question about the true nature of these creatures. Unlike many of her comrades who harbor a deep-seated hatred for Titans, Hanji views them with a sense of wonder, even developing emotional attachments to captured test subjects, giving them names like Sawney and Beane, and crying when they are harmed or killed. This enthusiasm for research is boundless, and Hanji is known to lecture uninterested colleagues, such as Eren Yeager, on the minute details of experiments for entire nights without rest.

Beneath this eccentric and energetic exterior lies a complex and profoundly serious individual. Hajime Isayama, the creator of the series, has noted that Hanji is arguably the scariest character when genuinely angered. This is evident when Hanji, enraged by the cover-up of the Titans within the walls, threatens to throw Pastor Nick from the top of Wall Sina. As a leader, Hanji is a tactical genius, capable of making rapid, sharp deductions in high-pressure situations and formulating effective plans. However, Hanji also struggles with significant self-doubt and a tendency toward indecisiveness, often feeling the immense pressure of the lives dependent on her choices. This inner conflict becomes a central part of her development after inheriting the role of commander, as she grapples with feelings of unworthiness compared to her revered predecessor, Erwin Smith.

Motivated by a deep-seated sense of responsibility to give meaning to the sacrifices of fallen comrades, Hanji's ultimate goal is the pursuit of knowledge to secure humanity's freedom. This dedication to understanding the truth often overrides conventional thinking, leading to unorthodox but effective strategies. In the story, Hanji is a pivotal figure in many key operations, including the plan to capture the Female Titan, the mission to reclaim Wall Maria, and later, leading the Survey Corps in its fight against the Marleyan military. Her relationships are central to her character; she shares a deep, long-standing bond of trust and mutual respect with Levi, often teasing him about his cleaning habits while relying on him for his steadfast judgment and support. She holds the late Commander Erwin Smith on a pedestal, admiring his strategic genius and leadership, which makes her own perceived failures as his successor all the more painful.

Throughout the series, Hanji undergoes significant development. After initially being portrayed as a brilliant but single-minded researcher, the responsibility of commanding the Survey Corps forces a maturation in her character. She is forced to make impossible choices, such as sanctioning the use of torture to extract information and leading soldiers into battles with monumental stakes. Her journey culminates in her final, heroic act. To stop Eren Yeager's genocidal Rumbling and allow her comrades to escape on an aircraft, Hanji voluntarily steps down as commander, passes the title to Armin Arlert, and alone faces a horde of colossal Titans. Despite being gravely outmatched, she successfully destroys several of them before being incinerated by their intense heat, sacrificing her life with the exclamation that Titans are truly wonderful, embodying her lifelong passion and dedication to her cause until the very end.

Hanji possesses notable abilities that extend beyond scientific acumen. Although having a lower rating in pure hand-to-hand combat, the official guidebook gives her perfect scores for action, intelligence, coordination, and strategic thinking. Hanji is an expert in the use of vertical maneuvering equipment and a brilliant strategist, capable of devising complex capture operations with minimal casualties. Hanji's true strength is the ability to synthesize disparate pieces of information to form accurate conclusions, such as deducing that Titans were transformed humans or predicting a shifter's movements during battle while suffering from severe burns.
