Description
Kagami Mikage is a distant cousin of the protagonist, Aya Mikage, and serves as a central antagonist in the narrative. He holds the position of director for the C-Project, also known as the Celestial Project, which is conducted by the powerful Mikage International corporation. Within the larger Mikage family, which largely fears the vengeful celestial maiden Ceres, Kagami is a notable exception. He is not only unafraid of Ceres but is deeply fascinated by her, almost to the point of appearing infatuated.
Kagami's primary motivation is scientific and deeply ideological. He seeks to capture Ceres to study her immense power, hoping to harness the abilities of the celestial beings known as tennyo. His ultimate goal is to use this knowledge to improve humanity and create a "perfect" human race, although his methods are morally questionable and often ruthless. This ambition stems from a traumatic childhood; he was frequently beaten by his mother for not being the best in his endeavors, an experience that fundamentally shaped his driven and unyielding personality.
In the story, Kagami acts as the driving force behind the scientific experiments on C-Genomes, descendants of celestial maidens. He is directly responsible for much of the suffering and manipulation that Aya and other characters endure, as he relentlessly pursues Ceres and her celestial robe, or hagoromo. His role often puts him in direct opposition to Aya's protectors, including Yuhi and Toya, as he uses the full resources of the Mikage family to achieve his ends. Despite his cold and calculating demeanor, he experiences a setback when his C-Project facility is compromised, and he is later forced to relocate his operations.
Key relationships define his actions throughout the series. His connection to Aya is that of a cousin and a captor, viewing her primarily as a vessel for the power he wishes to exploit. He also has a complex fascination with the entity Ceres, which transcends simple scientific curiosity. Later in the narrative, it is revealed that Kagami has a fiancée, though his all-consuming work with the C-Project has forced him to postpone their wedding, highlighting his obsessive dedication to his goals.
While Kagami himself does not possess supernatural abilities in the same manner as the celestial maidens, his influence derives from his considerable intelligence, authority, and access to advanced technology and research. He orchestrates the creation of an artificial hagoromo and oversees experiments designed to unlock and control tennyo powers. His character undergoes subtle development as his plans are continually thwarted, and his obsession leads him to increasingly desperate actions, including a direct attempt to kill Ceres when she taunts him about her pregnancy. Ultimately, he remains a figure driven by a past trauma and a vision of human perfection that justifies any means.
