Description
Kunio Yaobi runs a small record shop called Stars and Clowns inside the Usagiyama shopping arcade, where he is known simply as “Master” by Tamako Kitashirakawa and her circle of friends. He possesses a quiet and thoughtful temperament, often mumbling to himself in a way that can seem distant yet never unfriendly. Despite his reserved air, he is deeply caring and good-natured, quick to offer help when someone is in need. When the talking bird Dera arrives, Yaobi shows no alarm or surprise; instead he calmly treats the creature to sunflower seeds and serves him coffee in a demitasse cup with the composed hospitality of a lifelong shopkeeper.

His background is tied to the arcade’s older generation. In his school days he was the keyboardist in a band alongside Mamedai Kitashirakawa, Tamako’s father, who handled vocals. This shared history, explored later in the series, explains the easy, unspoken understanding between the two men and adds a layer of warmth to the community they both belong to. That musical past also makes Yaobi a natural resource when Tamako sets out to identify a song her late mother used to sing; he patiently guides her, drawing on his extensive knowledge of music and his memory of the past.

Yaobi’s role in the story is that of a steady, gentle anchor. He does not seek the spotlight, but his presence reinforces the feeling that the shopping arcade is a place where people watch out for one another across generations. He appears in both everyday vignettes and in moments of subtle emotional weight, always reacting with the same understated kindness. His relationships revolve around the other shopkeepers, particularly Mamedai, and around Tamako herself, for whom he acts as a quiet confidant and occasional mentor without ever being overbearing. There is little outward change in his character from beginning to end; instead, he embodies a reliable consistency that grounds the more lively personalities around him. His musical skill, his composure in the face of the unusual, and his ability to listen and offer just the right piece of advice when it matters make him an unobtrusive but essential part of the neighborhood.
