Description
Oscar Hamel, whose surname also appears in some materials as Hammel, is a supporting character in the anime Code Geass: Akito the Exiled. He is an adult soldier in the military of the European Union, with light gray hair cut to ear length and green eyes. He comes from a Europian family with a distinguished military pedigree, and for reasons that the story does not fully disclose, he was assigned to the wZERO unit, then commanded by Pierre Anou, where he serves as captain and commander of the security forces stationed at Weiswolf Castle, the unit's base of operations. In practical terms, he is considered the third most important person at the base, and his duties center on maintaining order, managing security, and resolving problems that arise within the castle rather than fighting on the front lines.

In personality, Hamel is calm, disciplined, and professional, with a composed manner that suits his security role. He is the kind of person who prioritizes achieving results over strictly following rules, a trait noticed by Margaret Walpole. Beneath his strict exterior, he shows a caring side toward his comrades, and he holds genuine affection for Leila Malcal and the members of the wZERO unit, including Akito Hyuga, though this warmth surfaces only in brief, rare moments of enthusiasm. He also appears free of the common ethnic prejudice of his time, referring to Japanese people as ancient Japanese rather than using the derogatory term Elevens.

His motivations revolve around duty and the safety of those under his charge. He takes his responsibility for the base and its personnel seriously and is willing to act decisively when circumstances demand it. Early in the story, when Leila subdues Commander Anou during a confrontation at the castle, Hamel responds to the commotion, praises her aikido technique, and administers a sedative to the still-resisting Anou before demanding an explanation, only for Leila to ignore his questions and assume command of the unit for the remainder of the operation.

Hamel's role in the story is that of a steadfast supporting figure within the wZERO unit. He initially strongly disapproves of Leila's decision to incorporate Ryo Sayama, Yukiya Naruse, and Ayano Kosaka into the Wyvern Squad after their attempted kidnapping of General Gene Smilas, expressing his objections to Claus Warwick on the grounds that criminals should not simply escape justice and that they might cause future problems. Claus dismisses these concerns. Over time, however, Hamel comes to regard the three as comrades and shows genuine concern for Yukiya when he appears to sacrifice himself during the battle at Weiswolf Castle. After the successful conclusion of Operation Gamma, which recaptures the city of Slonim, Hamel briefly lets his guard down and celebrates by raising his fist in triumph before becoming embarrassed and quickly regaining his composure.

In terms of abilities, Hamel is a capable Knightmare Frame pilot, though he is not commonly deployed in combat, as his primary focus remains security duty. His lack of regular practice forces him to review the piloting manual in the days before the attack by the Holy Order of Michael on the castle. During that siege, he personally sorties in Leila's Alexander Type-02, acting as commander of a unit of Alexander drones piloted by members of the special security unit, providing rear support. After the war ends, Hamel leaves the army. Claus introduces him to Margaret Walpole, the president of the United States of Europia, and Hamel accepts her offer to serve as her bodyguard, joining the security department as her chief escort.
