Description
Leila Malkal is a central character in the anime Code Geass: Akito the Exiled. She serves as a military officer in the European Union Army, commanding the special unit wZERO, which is composed of young Japanese pilots known as Elevens. Her full birth name is Leila Breisgau, born to former Britannian aristocrats who defected to the European Union in pursuit of freedom and democracy. Her father was a politician assassinated in a terrorist attack when she was six years old, and her mother died shortly afterward when their car was attacked while fleeing. Left alone in a snowy forest, Leila fell into a frozen pond and was on the verge of death when she was rescued by a woman known as the Witch of the Forest, who offered her a contract for a power called Geass. Because Leila was still a child, the woman gave her the option not to use the power, telling her it would fade by adulthood if never activated. Leila later forgot this encounter, dismissing it as a dream. After the deaths of her parents, she was adopted by the wealthy and influential Malcal family and was betrothed to their third son. She excelled academically, skipping grades and graduating from university, and then chose to join the military.
In the army, Leila initially served as an adjutant to Commander Pierre Anou. She planned a rescue operation known as Operation Alpha but confronted Anou over his last-minute decision to send Japanese youths on suicide attacks. After removing him from command, she was promoted to lieutenant colonel and given direct leadership of the wZERO Unit. Her command style is marked by a deep commitment to the well‑being of her subordinates. She is kind, idealistic, and holds no prejudice against the Japanese, often correcting superiors who refer to them as Elevens. Leila struggles with the ethical weight of sending young soldiers into battle and actively seeks ways to bring them back safely, even fighting alongside them. Despite her refined upbringing and polite demeanor, she is resolute and unafraid to stand up to authority when she believes injustice is being done.
Leila’s motivations are rooted in a sincere desire to end the war and to give the members of her unit a home and a sense of belonging. She believes that if people could truly understand one another, conflict would disappear. This idealistic perspective drives her actions and influences the development of her latent Geass. Her Geass, called the Choice of Possibilities, was granted by C.C. eleven years before the events of the story but remained dormant because Leila chose not to use it. Activating for the first time during a confrontation with the antagonist Shin Hyuga, it manifests through her left eye with a distinctive blue color. The power allows her to perceive visions of possibilities, share thoughts, memories, and emotions between individuals without words, and even observe the pasts of others. It can also counter and inflict pain on other Geass users, as she demonstrated against Shin. Combined with the Brain Raid System used by the wZERO unit, her ability creates a unique synchronization that intertwines the consciousnesses of those connected.
Leila’s key relationships include her bond with Akito Hyuga, the pilot of the wZERO unit. She is his superior officer but gradually develops a close, personal connection with him. Over the course of the story, the two share their traumatic pasts and come to understand each other deeply, eventually forming a romantic relationship by the series’ conclusion. Her relationship with Shin Hyuga is adversarial; he seeks to use her Geass for his own ends, but Leila ultimately stands against his destructive plans. She also fosters a supportive environment for her unit members, Ryo Sayama, Ayano Kosaka, and Yukiya Naruse, integrating them into the Wyvern Squad and earning their trust.
Throughout the series, Leila undergoes significant development. She begins as a capable but somewhat idealistic officer who struggles with the harsh realities of war. As she faces betrayal, loss, and the awakening of her Geass, she becomes more pragmatic while maintaining her core principles. In the final act, after the European Army becomes a republic, she retires from the military and starts a new life alongside Akito. Her notable abilities include being a highly skilled combatant, holding a black belt in Aikido, which she demonstrates by subduing armed opponents with ease. Combined with her military training, this makes her more than a strategist—she is also a capable fighter on the ground.
