Description
Akito Hyuga is the central protagonist of the original video animation series Code Geass: Akito the Exiled. He is a 17-year-old soldier of Japanese descent, often referred to as an "Eleven," who fights for the United Republic of Europia (E.U.) against the invading Holy Britannian Empire. He holds the rank of lieutenant and is a member of the special forces unit wZERO, also known as the Wyvern Squad, which is composed of teenage exiles from Japan and commanded by Leila Malcal.
Akito’s background is marked by profound tragedy. He was born and raised in the E.U. and shares a complex and traumatic history with his older half-brother, Shin Hyuga Shaing, who serves as a primary antagonist. During Akito’s childhood, Shin used his Geass power to give Akito the single command, "die." Because Akito was too young to fully comprehend the concept of death, the command did not function as intended, but it left his mind permanently scarred and unstable. This event, combined with witnessing Shin murder their family, shapes the core of Akito’s psychological torment.
At the beginning of the story, Akito is defined by a stoic, introverted, and isolated personality. He is a loner who rarely speaks about himself or his past, displaying a lack of emotion in normal situations. However, this calm exterior masks a deeply twisted and mentally unstable interior, driven by a burning hatred for his brother and a death wish, as he frequently claims to have "already died once". His primary motivation is revenge: he lives only to kill his brother Shin.
Akito’s role in the story is that of the wZERO squad’s most talented but also most volatile soldier. He is often at the center of the unit’s most dangerous operations, earning him the fearsome nickname "Hannibal's Ghost" from enemy pilots. The narrative follows his journey from a broken, revenge-driven individual to someone who begins to value his own life and the bonds he forms with his comrades. A key relationship is with his commanding officer, Leila Malcal. Their bond develops slowly, moving from professional respect to a deep, personal connection where Leila’s desire for him to "live" directly challenges his own wish for death. He also develops significant, though initially tense, relationships with his fellow Japanese squad members Ryo Sayama, Ayano Kosaka, and Yukiya Naruse, with whom he eventually forms a genuine camaraderie.
Akito’s most notable ability is his unique and cursed relationship with Geass. The command "die" implanted by his brother did not kill him but instead gave him the ability to enter a berserker state at will. When he activates this power, his pupils are outlined in red, and he becomes a savage and nearly unstoppable force on the battlefield, exhibiting superhuman speed, strength, and a bloodthirsty drive to kill. He can also seemingly see the spirits of his fallen comrades, a manifestation of his post-traumatic stress disorder.
Throughout the series, Akito undergoes significant character development. He slowly opens up to his squad, revealing the source of his trauma during a stay with a Romani community and allowing himself to experience moments of peace and even happiness. His relationship with Leila is the catalyst for this change, helping him overcome his grief and the curse of his past. In a pivotal moment, he resists his brother’s Geass command to kill Leila, demonstrating his growing free will and breaking the curse’s hold over him. By the end of the story, he has largely shed his cold demeanor, becoming a more caring and emotionally open person, and ultimately chooses to leave the military to live a peaceful life with Leila.
