Description
Ayano Kosaka is a central figure in Code Geass: Akito the Exiled. She is a young woman of Japanese descent, known for her calm demeanor and exceptional combat skills, particularly with a blade. Physically, she has a slender build, fair skin, short black hair, and distinctive pink eyes.

Ayano was born on July 16th in the Europia United, and despite being ethnically Japanese, she has never set foot in Japan. Her connection to her heritage comes from her family, as she lived in a Japanese ghetto within Europia with her older sister and her grandfather. Her grandfather, who taught her about their samurai ancestry, passed down a precious family heirloom: a kodachi, a traditional short sword. This blade, crafted by the 13th-century swordsmith Hachiya Nagamitsu, is one of her most prized possessions.

Before the events of the story, Ayano became a member of a resistance group led by Ryo Sayama. This group, which she considered a family, suffered heavy losses over time, including the deaths of her friends Shinji and Mariko shortly before the series begins. These losses left Ryo, Yukiya Naruse, and Ayano as the sole surviving members of their original cell.

Ayano possesses a composed and professional personality, especially during missions where she remains calm and collected without letting emotions interfere. However, beneath this exterior, she is a gentle but fierce young woman who is deeply caring toward her friends. She can be particular about her circumstances and initially expressed dissatisfaction with her new life after being recruited, especially after her kodachi was confiscated. Despite her tough exterior, she is noted to act her age at times and is capable of forming close, sisterly bonds, such as the one she eventually develops with her commanding officer, Leila Malcal.

Her primary motivation is intertwined with her sense of displacement and a longing for a homeland she has never seen. Unlike her comrades, she harbors the deepest feelings about one day visiting Japan. This desire for a new life and her skepticism about the Europan military using "Elevens" (Japanese people) as expendable assets initially makes her reluctant to serve. Her experiences alongside her fellow pilots, particularly Akito Hyuga, lead her to gain sympathy for their shared struggles and commit to the W-0 unit.

Within the W-0 unit, also known as the Wyvern squad, Ayano serves as a pilot for the Alexander Type-02 Knightmare Frame, a specialized unit for the Europan military. Her role in the story begins as a member of Ryo's group, which launches an operation to kidnap a Europan general. Though the plan fails due to the intervention of Akito Hyuga, the group is scouted by Leila Malcal and given a chance to avoid prosecution for their crimes by joining her new force. Their early time in the unit is marked by an attempted escape, as they were wary of the Europan military's intentions. However, after facing combat together and witnessing Akito's traumatic past, Ayano and the others choose to stay and fight alongside him.

Ayano's key relationships evolve significantly throughout the narrative. She views Ryo and Yukiya not just as comrades, but as the only family she has left. Her relationship with Leila Malcal begins with distrust and resentment, particularly over Leila's confiscation of her treasured kodachi. Over time, this resentment fades as they build mutual respect, and Ayano eventually comes to see Leila as a sister figure. She also develops a bond with the protagonist, Akito Hyuga, showing concern for him and even lending him her precious kodachi, claiming it will bring him luck.

Ayano demonstrates notable abilities both as a soldier and a pilot. She is highly skilled in Japanese martial arts, which is why she constantly carries her kodachi. On the ground, she is a formidable fighter capable of disarming trained opponents. In her Knightmare Frame, she is an adept pilot, holding the rank of Warrant Officer, and is shown to be proficient in both ranged and melee combat, even when at a disadvantage. Her development culminates in her decision to embrace her role in the W-0 unit, finding a new purpose and family among her fellow pilots. By the end of the story, she and the rest of the Ashura Strike Force choose to live a quiet life with a group of elderly Romani people.
