Description
Ayuko Oka is a student in class 2-A at Kazamidai High School, where she serves as the class health committee officer. Standing at 143 centimeters tall, she has a short stature that makes her appear younger than her seventeen years, though this is contrasted by her mature, curvaceous figure which is noticeable to her classmates. Her large glasses are a defining feature, a necessity due to her significant myopia with vision measured at 0.1 in her right eye and 0.2 in her left. She keeps her brown hair cut short, which further emphasizes her youthful and charismatic image. Her typical school attire is often complemented by accessories such as socks, a bow, and a neckerchief.

Despite her childlike appearance, Ayuko possesses a responsible, mature, and direct personality. She is academically excellent, consistently ranking near the top of her year. Her role as health officer demonstrates her strong sense of duty and her caring nature towards her peers. She is also a talented cook, known for preparing her own elaborate bento lunches daily, with dishes like bacon-wrapped asparagus and shrimp spring rolls being specialties she often shares with her friends. Beneath her responsible exterior lies a mischievous and curious side. She has a playful, sometimes teasing demeanor, and enjoys investigating the unusual situations of those around her, particularly her friend Mikoto Urabe. Her curiosity can manifest as a desire to meddle, positioning her as a catalyst who pushes others to confront their own feelings and relationships.

Ayuko has been in a secret romantic relationship with her classmate, Kouhei Ueno, since the winter of their first year of high school. Their relationship is largely kept hidden from other students, and they are rarely seen interacting publicly. In private, however, they are close and comfortable, often calling each other by their first names, with Kouhei referring to her as Ayu. She tends to take the lead in their dynamic, guiding Kouhei and enjoying his devoted infatuation with her. Their relationship has progressed to include physical intimacy such as kissing, and she sometimes invites him to her home for study sessions when her parents are away.

Her most significant relationship within the story's events is with her classmate, Mikoto Urabe. Initially not close, Ayuko becomes fascinated after witnessing the unique bond between Mikoto and Akira Tsubaki. Driven by curiosity and a sense of jealousy towards the intensity of their connection, she actively seeks to befriend Mikoto. She uses her homemade lunches as a way to bridge the gap, often sharing food with Mikoto, who typically does not bring a meal to school. Through this friendship, Ayuko discovers she possesses a strange and notable ability: a physical and emotional sensitivity to Mikoto's saliva. She first realizes this when, after treating a cut on Mikoto's knee and later drinking from a juice container that had Mikoto's saliva on it, the same wound manifests on her own knee. This allows her to vicariously experience Mikoto's physical sensations and emotional states, which she uses to better understand her friend's feelings about love and her relationship with Tsubaki. This unusual connection leads to moments where Ayuko and Mikoto share saliva as a kind of dessert or experiment, deepening their peculiar friendship and allowing Ayuko to act as a confidante and advisor on love.

Throughout the story, Ayuko serves as a key supporting character whose actions and insights help illuminate the central themes of love and emotional intimacy. Her direct and inquisitive nature, combined with her unique empathic link to Mikoto, allows her to draw out and interpret the inner emotional worlds of the protagonists, adding depth to the narrative's exploration of adolescent relationships.
