Description
Aria Sanka is a supporting character in the series Sankarea: Undying Love, serving as the stepmother of the protagonist Rea Sanka and the second wife of Rea's father, Dan'ichirō Sanka. She also holds the position of director at the Sanka Girls Academy, the school Rea attends. Her background is rooted in service to the wealthy Sanka family; she was originally employed as a maid in the household during Dan'ichirō's youth. After the death of Rea's biological mother, Aria devoted herself to caring for the emotionally broken Dan'ichirō. This dedication led to her being accepted as his second wife, though the marriage was built on duty and circumstance rather than love.
Physically, Aria is a refined woman of notable height, standing approximately 170 cm (about 5 feet 7 inches) tall. She is characterized by a distinctive teardrop-shaped mole near her left eye, a feature she shares with a mysterious girl linked to a dream in the story's OVA episode. During her time as a maid, she was known for wearing her long, straight hair in a ponytail.
Aria's personality is defined by a deep and pervasive bitterness. Outwardly, she maintains a cold, stern, and calculating demeanor, but this exterior masks intense feelings of jealousy, insecurity, and loneliness. Her marriage to Dan'ichirō is emotionally distant and has never been physically intimate. Overwhelmed by his neglect and her isolation, Aria frequently resorts to drinking alcohol during the daytime and seeks male companionship at host clubs. Despite her sophisticated and elegant appearance, she is a deeply unhappy woman whose actions are driven by her own feelings of powerlessness and rejection.
Her motivations are complex, stemming from a transformation in her own desires. Initially, she approached Dan'ichirō driven by ambition and a desire to elevate her status by becoming the wife of the Sanka family head. However, over time, her ambition evolved into a genuine, though unrequited, longing for his affection. Her failure to secure his love, combined with his obsessive and inappropriate focus on their daughter Rea, has turned her resentment toward her stepdaughter. She views Rea not as a child to be loved, but as a rival and a symbol of everything she herself lacks.
In the story, Aria's primary role is to represent the emotional dysfunction and decay within the Sanka household. Her harsh and critical treatment of Rea exacerbates the girl's depression and desire to escape her home life, indirectly contributing to the central events of the plot. While Rea, unaware that Aria is not her biological mother, cannot understand the source of this cruelty, Aria harbors negative feelings toward Rea's deceased mother and sometimes unleashes intense hatred toward her stepdaughter.
Her key relationships are almost uniformly strained. With her husband Dan'ichirō, she shares a cold, formal relationship devoid of intimacy, where she exists only in the role of Rea's mother. Her relationship with Rea is tense and antagonistic, characterized by disdain and coldness on Aria's part. At one point, feeling desperate and lonely, she even makes an unsuccessful advance toward the protagonist Chihiro Furuya, who rejects her due to his exclusive obsession with zombies.
Aria shows signs of development later in the narrative. Her personality softens somewhat following a mysterious shared dream involving Rea and Chihiro, which features a young girl with translucent wings who torments Rea. In the series' ending, she experiences a significant shift; after a confrontation where she and an ally sequester Rea, Dan'ichirō unexpectedly expresses his gratitude. This event leads to a reconciliation, and by the conclusion, Aria and her husband have grown closer and are seen greeting others together as a more unified pair.
Aria possesses no supernatural abilities, but her notable traits include her position as a school director and her complex, deeply human flaws. It is also noted that while she loves cats, she has a distinct aversion to zombie cats.
