TV-Series
Description
Donar Dantes is a veteran soldier who serves as the chief of the male academy at Neo-DEAVA, which also entails duties as an instructor. Several years prior to the main events of the story, he was one of the pilots chosen for the first sortie of the Aquarion against the Abductors. This mission, which took place eight years before the series begins, ended in a catastrophic disaster. During this incident, the Aquarion went berserk, an event later attributed to the fact that two of its pilots, including Donar, were in love with each other. As a direct result of this failure, Donar lost both of his arms and, more tragically, his girlfriend, a pilot named Nanaan, disappeared along with the third member of their team.
In the present day of the series, Donar's appearance is defined by the consequences of that accident. He has dark brown hair and green-yellow eyes, and he wears a dark-green military uniform that reflects his disciplined, no-nonsense approach. The most prominent feature is his pair of prosthetic arms, which replace the limbs he lost. These mechanical limbs are modular and can be fitted with various attachments for different purposes, including hooks or built-in weaponry such as machine guns. The right side of his mouth is also implied to be mechanical.
Donar's personality is shaped by his past trauma and his current responsibilities. He is described as hot-blooded and aggressive, with a strong combat focus that prioritizes the extermination of enemies above all else. As an instructor and authority figure at the academy, he carries himself with the demeanor of a seasoned soldier, often appearing stern and pragmatic. He is not merely an administrator; he is directly involved in training and overseeing the younger Element users. For instance, he has been shown physically dragging a reluctant pilot into a cockpit and using a small blowgun with extreme precision and ease to monitor a student from a great distance, demonstrating his keen marksmanship skills. His past failure also serves as a primary cautionary tale at the academy. He is the living, visible proof of why romantic love between pilots is forbidden, as his own experience demonstrated the uncontrollable power and danger that such emotions can unleash when channeled through the Aquarion.
His role in the story is primarily as a supporting figure and an authority figure within Neo-DEAVA. He acts as a tactical leader and a mentor, though his mentorship is often gruff and action-oriented. His key relationships are defined by his position and his past. His dynamic with other staff members, such as the commander and the mysterious Fudo Zen, is one of professional respect for their authority, even as he embodies the very rule they enforce. With the student pilots, he acts as a stern taskmaster and commander. His most significant, yet absent, relationship is with his lost girlfriend, Nanaan. Her disappearance and his own maiming are the driving forces behind his character, fueling his serious demeanor and his adherence to the rules of engagement, which are designed to prevent another such catastrophe.
Throughout the story, Donar shows little overt development, as his primary narrative function is to represent the hardened, experienced veteran who has already learned the cost of failure. He is a static character who provides stability and a grim reminder of the stakes involved in piloting Aquarion. His development occurred in the past; the present-day Donar is the result of that evolution. He adapts to the new circumstances of co-ed piloting and the chaos that ensues, but his core motivation remains consistent: to effectively fight the enemy and ensure that no other pilot suffers a fate similar to his own.
In terms of abilities, beyond his skill as a soldier and commander, Donar is a highly capable sharpshooter. His proficiency extends to unconventional weapons, as he can use a small blowgun with deadly accuracy over long distances. His prosthetic arms are a notable asset in combat, providing versatility as they can be swapped for weaponized attachments like guns, allowing him to engage in direct combat effectively despite his physical limitations. His most significant ability, however, might be his experience; as one of the few characters to have survived a berserk Aquarion activation, he possesses firsthand knowledge of its danger that informs his every action as an instructor and leader.
