Description
Dyan, whose full name is Dyan Stribog Dolina, is a character from the anime Last Exile: Fam, The Silver Wing. She is a seventeen-year-old girl from the cold, isolated nation of Glacies. As a member of the Winged Priestesses, she holds a position of high honor and serves as the commander of the Adamas Squadron, piloting the Rocket Fighter 01 with her navigator, Viola. Due to the famous and popular reputation of the Adamas Squadron, she is often admired and honored by the people of her homeland.
Dyan is defined by her intense loyalty to Glacies and her identity as its protector. Initially, she presents a reserved and pragmatic exterior, shaped by her nation's long history of isolation, which began after the assassination of the Augusta at the Grand Race. She does not share the optimistic and romanticized view of the Grand Race held by the series' protagonist, Fam Fan Fan, as her nation's memory is one of tragedy and subsequent withdrawal from the world. She is also shown to have a good memory, able to learn Princess Millia il Vlech Cutrettola Turan's full name after hearing it only once.
Dyan’s role in the story begins with a life-debt to the sky pirates Fam and Giselle Collette. After her rocket fighter is damaged in a skirmish against the Ades Federation, Dyan blacks out as her craft enters a deadly spiral. She is saved when Fam and Giselle use their small vanship, the Vespa, to stabilize her ship. In return for saving her life, Dyan later rescues the trio after they crash-land in Glacies. She provides them with shelter, supplies, and spare parts to repair their vanship, and Millia serves as a translator, as Dyan only speaks the native language of Glacies. Before they depart, Fam takes Dyan for a ride in her Vespa to let her feel the wind, an experience that creates a meaningful, if brief, connection between them.
Her primary motivation evolves from defending her homeland to avenging its destruction. When the Ades forces, led by Luscinia Hāfez, invade Glacies, Dyan leads her squadron into battle. Despite her skills, the invasion results in a catastrophic defeat; her own squadron is barely saved by a last-minute warning from Fam, but the majority of the Winged Priestesses are annihilated, and Glacies is destroyed. Following this tragedy, she is forced into hiding. Consumed by a desire for retribution, she and her surviving comrades reluctantly join a counter-strike rebellion against Luscinia led by dissenting factions within Ades.
Her key relationships are complex and influenced by the war. She holds a deep animosity towards Millia, not because of Millia’s own actions, but because her older sister, Liliana, is allied with Luscinia, the man responsible for Glacies’s ruin. Dyan explicitly states that she cannot be friends with Millia for this reason. This bitterness culminates in a suicide mission during the signing of a peace treaty. Dyan attempts to assassinate Luscinia but fails when Liliana steps in front of the bullet. She is immediately captured and imprisoned. While her fellow Glacian countrymen treat her as a hero for the attempt, Dyan herself is not happy with the outcome and begins to feel deep regret for her actions.
In terms of development and abilities, Dyan is a highly skilled Rocket Fighter pilot, a testament to her training as a Winged Priestess. Her character arc is one of a proud defender whose world is shattered by forces beyond her control. She transforms from a celebrated and capable squadron commander into a refugee driven by vengeance. Her final act of violence fails to achieve its goal, bringing her no peace, only regret, highlighting the tragic consequences of the cycle of revenge.
