Description
Gai Tsutsugami is the 17-year-old leader of the Funeral Parlor, a resistance group fighting to liberate Japan from the control of the GHQ. His early life was marked by tragedy and experimentation. Orphaned, he was taken in by Shuichiro Keido and used as a test subject in cruel experiments involving the Apocalypse Virus, all part of a project to create a male counterpart, an "Adam," for the powerful Mana Ouma. Fleeing this facility, he fell into the ocean and was found washed ashore on a beach by the young siblings Shu and Mana Ouma. Mana nursed him back to health, and he was given the name "Triton" by her. During these childhood years, he lived with the Ouma family, becoming Shu's best friend and falling deeply in love with Mana.

As a child, Gai was described as having a passive and timid personality, contrasting sharply with the confident Shu he admired. He was the first to realize that Mana had been infected by the Apocalypse Virus, which was driving her insane. His attempts to warn Shu culminated in a confrontation on the day of the "Lost Christmas" disaster, during which Mana's power was unleashed. Gai protected a terrified Shu during the catastrophe, vowing to become stronger before he departed. This event became the catalyst for his transformation. He left to forge himself into a person of strength and conviction, modeling himself after the qualities he once saw in Shu.

In the present, Gai is the charismatic and unwavering leader of the Funeral Parlor. He is bold, pragmatic, and a master strategist, known for his ability to devise complex plans and manipulate situations and people to achieve his goals. While his confident and sometimes ruthless demeanor is largely genuine, he also projects a persona of strength to lead his followers and has been shown to feel the weight of his responsibilities, occasionally revealing a more insecure side. A central, hidden motivation drives all of his actions: the desire to free Mana Ouma from her crystallized prison. He states that everything he does is for the sake of one day taking her in his arms, and saving the world is merely a means to that end. This love for Mana, a remnant of his childhood, is the primary engine of his character.

Gai's role in the story is initially that of a mentor to Shu Ouma. Although the power of the Void Genome, the "Power of the Kings," was meant for him, it accidentally bonds with Shu. Recognizing Shu's potential, Gai orchestrates events to draw the reluctant boy into the Funeral Parlor, guiding him in using his ability to extract Voids from people for their missions. Following the disastrous "Lost Christmas" revival attempt, Gai is killed protecting Shu from Mana. However, he is later resurrected by Haruka Ouma and the GHQ, returning in the second half of the story as a primary antagonist. After his resurrection, his hair turns white, and his right eye becomes red with crystal formations around it, marking his changed state. In this new role, he coldly severs Shu's arm to reclaim the King's Power, declaring himself the true king and using his newfound authority to impose a chilling global stalemate to further his ultimate plan.

His key relationships define his journey. His bond with Shu Ouma is the most complex; they were childhood friends and rivals, with Gai secretly harboring both a deep admiration for and envy of the qualities Shu possessed. This transforms into a mentor-student dynamic and finally into open antagonism before reaching a bitter understanding. His love for Mana Ouma is the core of his being, the goal for which he is willing to become a villain. Inori Yuzuriha is a vital tool in his plan; he uses her both as a soldier and as a vessel to keep his fatal Apocalypse Virus infection in check through regular blood transfusions. He also commands the loyalty of other Funeral Parlor members, such as Ayase Shinomiya and Shibungi, who are drawn to his leadership.

Gai undergoes significant development, transforming from a frightened experimental subject into a charismatic revolutionary, and eventually into a self-sacrificing demon lord. He deliberately takes on the role of the world's enemy and orchestrates a new global Lost Christmas, not out of malice, but as the only way he could see to finally end Mana's suffering and free her soul. In his final moments, after being defeated by Shu, he reveals his true purpose and passes the torch to his old friend, finally embracing Mana as they crystallize and disappear together.

Before gaining the King's Power, Gai was already a formidable threat. He was a highly skilled combatant, proficient in hand-to-hand fighting and marksmanship, capable of even disabling advanced military mechs with a pistol. He also possessed a natural ability to perceive the shape of a person's Void due to his advanced infection with the Apocalypse Virus. After his resurrection and reclaiming the Void Genome, his power increased dramatically. His own unique Void, which he could use at will, was a special rifle capable of forcibly extracting another person's Void by shooting them, bypassing the need for direct contact. As the King, he demonstrated the ability to combine multiple Voids into powerful, destructive weapons.
