Description
Arisa Kuhouin is introduced as a 17-year-old student and the dignified student council president at Tennouzu First High School. She is the sole heiress to the powerful Kuhouin Group, a position that has granted her a life of immense privilege from a young age. Arisa is a tall, beautiful young woman with long, flowing blonde hair and reddish-brown eyes, and she is almost always seen in her school uniform. Her demeanor is characterized by a strong sense of pride and a virtuous, if fastidious, nature. She maintains a high-class, almost aristocratic bearing, and her reputation at school is spotless, making her a figure of admiration among the student body. She takes her responsibilities as student council president seriously and is known to enforce rules and punish disrespectful behavior, as seen when she slaps a male student for spreading malicious rumors.

Behind her composed and capable exterior, however, Arisa harbors a degree of inner weakness and indecisiveness. Her Void, which manifests as a powerful shield, is named the Coward's Shield, reflecting a desire to protect a fragile self that she keeps hidden from others. This vulnerability becomes more apparent as the pressures on her increase, revealing a tendency towards passivity and a need for guidance and protection. Initially, she relies on the expectations of her prestigious family and her role at school to define her, but she struggles to make firm decisions on her own.

Arisa’s role in the story evolves significantly from a supporting figure to a key antagonist. Early on, she uses her authority to help the protagonist, Shu Ouma, by fabricating a story to dispel rumors after his return to school, thus helping him reintegrate with his classmates. Her path takes a crucial turn during a gala on the Kuhouin Group's cruise ship. There, she is captivated by the charismatic leader of the resistance group Funeral Parlor, Gai Tsutsugami, who charms her. On this same night, Shu draws out her Void for the first time—a small, ball-like object that expands into a massive disc—to shield the ship from a GHQ missile attack. This event marks the beginning of her deep, almost romantic infatuation with Gai, which becomes a primary driver of her subsequent actions.

Her motivations become increasingly complex as the series progresses. Following the outbreak of the second Lost Christmas, the school falls under Shu's control, and he establishes a strict, quasi-military regime. Arisa, now a former student council president who resigned due to her perceived indecisiveness, becomes disillusioned with Shu's tyrannical rule and the students' growing resentment toward her passive leadership. Her desire to be strong and to follow someone she perceives as a true leader, namely Gai, leads her down a dark path. After discovering that a person will die if their Void is destroyed, a secret Shu is keeping, she attempts to broadcast this information to the entire school, but is stopped when a virus-infected Inori Yuzuriha impales her hand with a crystal. This traumatic event further radicalizes her.

Her key relationships are central to her transformation. Her admiration for Gai evolves into an unwavering loyalty, and she becomes willing to do anything to be by his side and earn his approval. This devotion directly conflicts with her relationship with Shu, whom she initially supported but eventually betrays. Her relationship with her grandfather, Okina Kuhouin, the head of the Kuhouin Group, is also critical. In a shocking act of betrayal, after siding with the GHQ, she personally kills her own grandfather when he tries to stop her, choosing her newfound allegiances over her family. In a desperate act to survive and gain information, she also uses her body to seduce a guard named Nanba, demonstrating the lengths to which she will go to protect her connection to Gai and her own position.

Arisa's character development is a clear arc from a position of noble, if passive, authority to outright betrayal. She begins as a respected leader who seeks to maintain order and help her peers. However, her internal weakness and infatuation with a powerful figure cause her to abandon her principles. She transitions from being an ally of Shu and the Funeral Parlor to a collaborator with the GHQ, the very organization that oppresses Japan. This transformation culminates in her becoming a villainous figure, directly contributing to the coup against Shu and coldly witnessing as Gai severs Shu's right arm to steal his power.

Regarding notable abilities, Arisa's primary power lies in her Void, which is extracted by Shu using his Power of the Kings. Her Void is called the Coward's Shield, which takes the form of a small, luminous orb that can unfurl into a large, incredibly durable, multi-faceted shield. This shield is powerful enough to intercept and destroy a volley of multiple incoming Dragoon missiles, saving the cruise ship and everyone on board. The name and nature of her Void serve as a direct metaphor for her personality, as it is said to armor her weak inner self, protecting her from harm both physically and emotionally. Later in the series, after defecting to the GHQ, a genetic mark known as a genome imprint appears on the back of her right hand, signifying a deeper connection to the Apocalypse Virus and its related powers.
