Description
Neon Nostrade is the daughter of Light Nostrade, the head of the Nostrade Family, a Mafia organization. She is a teenage girl who serves as the family's primary source of income and influence due to her unique Nen ability. Despite her deep involvement in the criminal underworld, Neon is a sheltered and frivolous young woman who has been heavily spoiled by her father. She is characterized by a strong sense of entitlement and a demanding, capricious nature, often throwing tantrums when her desires are not immediately met. Her personality can be described as childlike and apathetic, stemming from an inability to fully comprehend complex adult emotions. This is coupled with a macabre hobby: she is a human body parts collector, seeking items such as the skin of leprosy patients and the eyes of the Kurta clan.
Neon's primary motivation is the pursuit of her own gratification, particularly through acquiring rare and gruesome collectibles. She is also driven by a genuine fascination with fortune-telling, inspired by a seer known as the Galaxy Grandmother whose words she cherished as a child. Her role in the story is central to the Yorknew City arc, where she arrives to participate in a high-profile underground auction. As the Nostrade Family's fortune teller, she is the key to her father's rise in the Mafia hierarchy, making her a highly protected asset.
Her most significant relationships are with her father, Light Nostrade, and her bodyguards, including Kurapika. Light Nostrade views his daughter primarily as a tool, valuing her prophetic ability more than her life, but he also indulges her every whim to maintain her cooperation. Kurapika is hired to protect her during the auction, and their relationship is largely professional, though Kurapika uses his position to further his own goals against the Phantom Troupe. Neon also shows a rare moment of genuine compassion for her maid, Eliza, choosing to comfort her instead of attending the auction.
Neon's development is marked by the loss of her ability. After being tricked by Chrollo Lucilger, the leader of the Phantom Troupe, her Nen ability, Lovely Ghostwriter, is stolen using his Skill Hunter. This loss causes the Nostrade Family's influence to collapse and leaves Neon vulnerable. Later events in the manga strongly imply that she has died, as her ability disappears from Chrollo's stolen skill book, a phenomenon that occurs when the original user dies.
Neon's sole notable ability is her Specialization-type Nen ability, Lovely Ghostwriter. This power manifests as automatic writing that produces prophetic poems. To use it, she requires the target's name, birth date, and blood type written in their own handwriting; if the person is not present, a photograph is also needed. The prophecies are one hundred percent accurate and consist of four or five four-line stanzas, each predicting an event for a week of the coming month. Crucially, if a prophecy foretells a misfortune, it also provides a warning that allows the subject to avoid the disaster. Neon herself is unaware that she is a Nen user and cannot read her own prophecies, as she believes doing so would reduce their accuracy.
