TV-Series
Description
Chrollo Lucilfer is the founder and leader of the Phantom Troupe, a notorious gang of thieves originating from Meteor City, a hidden junkyard settlement populated by outcasts and people without official records. He serves as the primary antagonist of the Yorknew City arc. Chrollo is a young man with black hair, dark grey eyes, and a distinctive purple cross-shaped tattoo on his forehead. He typically wears a dark, fur-collared coat with a golden St. Peter's Cross on the back and orb-shaped earrings. He is 177 centimeters tall and his age is told to be 26 at the time of his first appearance.
Chrollo’s personality is defined by a calm, charismatic, and highly intelligent demeanor that allows him to unite and command a group of volatile and dangerous individuals. He is a born strategist with immense self-control, showing no fear in the face of death. On one occasion, a character listening to his heartbeat described him as sounding like someone who was happy living alongside death, a state that deeply disturbed the listener. Despite the brutality he orchestrates, he displays a genuine appreciation for antique books and intellectual pursuits. His surface-level motivation is the survival of the Phantom Troupe above all else, including his own life. He stresses that the head of the spider is just another limb that can be sacrificed for the survival of the whole, and he operates without the grand ambitions of a typical tyrant.
At a deeper psychological level, Chrollo is driven by a form of identity crisis and a deterministic worldview. He struggles with a core lack of self-identity, which is reflected directly in his Nen ability, Skill Hunter. Unlike others who develop abilities that express their inner nature, Chrollo must steal the talents of others to define his power. He created the Phantom Troupe as a solution to this internal void, constructing an identity through the Spider. Each member of the troupe is viewed as an extension of himself, a part of his personality, and he feels the loss of a member as the loss of a part of his own being. Simultaneously, he is a strong determinist, or fatalist, believing that humans lack free will and are merely actors following a predetermined script. He does not condemn Judas for betraying Jesus, seeing it not as a choice but as an inevitable role. This philosophy explains his often detached reaction to events, including betrayal.
Chrollo acts as the strategic core of the Phantom Troupe. While he insists that his orders are absolute, he also maintains that his life is not the priority. However, the members of the Troupe treat him as the irreplaceable heart of the organization, willing to risk everything for his safety. His key relationships include his antagonistic bonds with Kurapika, the last surviving member of the Kurta clan, whom the Troupe massacred for their Scarlet Eyes. Kurapika successfully captures Chrollo and seals his Nen ability using Judgment Chain. His relationship with Hisoka Morow is another defining one. Initially, Chrollo tolerated Hisoka as a member who was useful to the Spider, but after Hisoka kills two members, Chrollo declares a personal vendetta. Regarding the Zoldyck family, he has survived encounters with Silva and Zeno simultaneously, showing his exceptional combat prowess.
Throughout the story, Chrollo remains a static figure of mystery, though his backstory reveals the tragedy that forged him. In his childhood, he and his friends enjoyed dubbing voices for a television show. However, after a friend named Sarasa was kidnapped and murdered by traffickers who targeted Meteor City residents because they had no legal existence, Chrollo resolved to turn their group into a terrifying villainous organization. He intended to make the Phantom Troupe so feared that no one would dare harm a citizen of Meteor City again, sacrificing his own humanity for the protection of his home. His strategic cunning is showcased when he steals Neon Nostrade's prophetic ability during the Yorknew City arc.
Chrollo is a Nen user of the Specialist type, possessing the ability Skill Hunter, materialized as a book titled Bandit's Secret. To steal an ability, he must fulfill four strict conditions within one hour: he must witness the ability in action, ask the victim about it and receive an answer, have the victim touch the handprint on his book cover, and complete these steps within an hour. Once stolen, the original user loses the ability to use that power. To execute a complex defeat of Hisoka, Chrollo upgraded his ability with a bookmark function called Double Face. This allows him to use a stolen ability while the book is closed or to utilize two different stolen abilities simultaneously, keeping his hands free for combat. Notable abilities in his repertoire include Sun and Moon, which causes explosions when symbols touch; Order Stamp, which controls puppets; Convert Hands, which swaps appearances; and Indoor Fish, which conjures fish that eat victims in a sealed room without pain. Despite his prodigious talent, Chrollo was rendered incapable of using Nen after Kurapika sealed his abilities, forcing him to seek an exorcist. Recently, he has boarded a ship heading for the Dark Continent with the rest of the Phantom Troupe, actively hunting Hisoka while also seeking to steal the Kakin Empire's royal treasures.
