Description
Alluka Zoldyck is the fourth child of Silva and Kikyo Zoldyck, the heads of the infamous Zoldyck family of assassins. Alluka shares a body with a mysterious, otherworldly entity named Nanika, whose name roughly translates to "something" in Japanese. This entity is believed to originate from the Dark Continent, specifically identified as one of five great calamities known as Ai. The nature of this possession and when it occurred remain largely unknown, but the two beings have coexisted within the same physical form since Alluka was very young. The Zoldyck family, viewing this dual existence as an uncontrollable threat, confined Alluka to a secluded room within their estate, guarded by several heavy doors. Unlike her siblings, Alluka received no assassin training and was isolated from the outside world due to the terrifying power wielded by Nanika.
In terms of personality, Alluka is a gentle, affectionate, and emotionally open child, a stark contrast to the cold and calculating nature typical of the Zoldyck family. This sweet disposition is most vividly displayed in the presence of Killua, the only family member who treats Alluka with unconditional love and respect. Alluka is deeply attached to Killua, referring to him with a warm and familiar term for "big brother". When Nanika is in control, the entity's personality is more simplistic and childlike, often speaking in broken phrases and using the word "Ai" as a signature expression. While Alluka appears cheerful and innocent, a lifetime of isolation and being feared by her own family has also imbued her with a sense of loneliness and a deep craving for acceptance. The Zoldyck parents, Silva and Kikyo, along with other brothers like Illumi, dehumanize Alluka, referring to the child as an "it" or a "thing" and claiming that Alluka has no soul. This harsh treatment underscores Alluka's role as the family's outcast, a living embodiment of power they cannot control and therefore choose to imprison.
Alluka's primary motivation is simply to be with and help Killua, the only source of genuine love and affection in life. This desire for connection is the driving force behind Alluka's actions throughout the story. Alluka does not seek power, wealth, or revenge; the core wish is for freedom and companionship. When Killua comes to free Alluka from confinement, Alluka eagerly agrees to leave with him, demonstrating complete trust in his protection. The narrative role of Alluka becomes crucial following the devastating events of the Chimera Ant arc. As Gon Freecss lies in a near-death, vegetative state, Killua returns to his family's estate specifically to retrieve Alluka, believing that Nanika's wish-granting power is the only thing that can save his best friend. Alluka thus serves as the emotional and plot-driven key to Gon's recovery, transforming from a hidden, tragic figure into the central element of the 13th Hunter Chairman Election arc. Beyond this healing act, Alluka's very existence introduces the broader, more dangerous mysteries of the Dark Continent into the main storyline, hinting at the vast, unexplored threats that lie beyond the known world.
The most significant relationship in Alluka's life is with Killua. He is the sole family member who consistently refers to Alluka as a sister and treats her as a human being rather than a monster or a tool. This bond grants Killua unique privileges over Nanika's powers, allowing him to give direct commands and bypass the dangerous rules that govern wishes for everyone else. In contrast, the relationship with the rest of the Zoldyck family is defined by fear, exploitation, and rejection. Silva, the father, sees Alluka as a threat to the family's safety, while Illumi views Alluka's power as a weapon he wishes to control, even going so far as to plot to manipulate Killua to gain command over Nanika. The servants are also instructed to follow strict protocols, and many have died as a result of failing to comply with Alluka's requests. The character's gender is a point of discussion, with official sources listing Alluka as male, the fourth son of the family. However, Killua consistently uses feminine pronouns and refers to Alluka as his sister, and Alluka uses a feminine personal pronoun. This discrepancy is often interpreted as Alluka having a female gender identity, with Killua being the only one to acknowledge and respect it, while the rest of the family, in their rejection, continue to use masculine terms.
Alluka undergoes significant development primarily through gaining freedom. Initially presented as a tragic, imprisoned child, Alluka's journey is one of liberation. By leaving the Zoldyck estate with Killua, Alluka escapes a life of isolation and fear. While Alluka does not undergo a profound internal personality shift, the external circumstances change dramatically. After healing Gon, Killua decides to protect Alluka and Nanika from those who would exploit them, and they set off on a journey together. This marks Alluka's transition from a captive plot device to an active participant in her own life, finally experiencing the world beyond her room. Her development is intrinsically linked to Killua's own growth, as his decision to protect her represents his final break from the Zoldyck family's toxic control.
Alluka's most notable abilities are not her own, but rather those of the entity Nanika, who resides within. Nanika possesses an immensely powerful, reality-altering wish-granting ability that is governed by a strict set of rules. To activate the power, a person must fulfill three consecutive requests made by Alluka. These requests can range from simple tasks like giving a piggyback ride to grotesque demands for body parts. Once the three requests are completed, Alluka's eyes and mouth turn pitch black, Nanika takes control, and the wisher can have any single wish granted, with virtually no limit on its scale. The consequences for failure are severe. If a person refuses four of Alluka's requests, they and at least one person they love most will die. The death toll can escalate dramatically depending on the magnitude of the previous wish, potentially killing dozens of people who were close to the victim.
There are several other known rules. The difficulty of Alluka's requests resets to an easy level after someone dies from refusing them. Once Alluka starts making requests of a specific person, the process cannot be transferred to someone else. Alluka cannot make requests of someone whose name is unknown. The same person cannot ask for consecutive wishes. However, Killua operates under a unique exemption. Because of his deep, loving bond with Alluka and Nanika, he can give direct commands to Nanika, bypassing the three-request rule entirely. Wishes made for healing also function differently; they require Nanika to touch the target and carry no cruel backlash, with subsequent requests being simple and kind. Alluka personally has no combat abilities or Nen skills and is physically as vulnerable as a normal child, making the host entirely dependent on Killua for protection.
