Description
Hanzo is an eighteen-year-old ninja from Jappon who belongs to the Hidden Cloud style, where he holds the rank of jonin, or upper ninja. He was applicant number two hundred ninety-four during the two hundred eighty-seventh Hunter Examination and successfully earned his license as one of its qualified graduates.
His background is steeped in the rigorous traditions of his secret ninja clan. He received intensive training from birth and claims to have already killed opponents by the age of ten. His primary motivation for becoming a Hunter is to find a legendary object known as the Hermit's Scroll, a quest that requires the special permissions and access that a Hunter license provides.
Hanzo has a noticeably contradictory personality. While one might expect a ninja to be silent and reserved, he is remarkably talkative, sociable, and often displays good spirits. This tendency to talk too much can lead him to reveal confidential information or become overconfident in his abilities. Despite his friendly demeanor, he remains a realist and maintains a ninja's caution, never accepting food or drink offered by others. When a situation demands it, he can be completely focused and cold-hearted, as demonstrated by his willingness to torture an opponent to achieve his objective.
In the story, Hanzo is first introduced as a standout participant in the Hunter Exam. He passes each phase with remarkable ease, earning him the favor of examiner Menchi. During the cooking portion of the exam, he is the only participant who correctly identifies sushi, though he becomes frustrated and inadvertently reveals the recipe to everyone else. During the final phase of the exam, he is pitted against Gon Freecss. Hanzo easily overpowers Gon, breaking his arm and inflicting severe punishment to force a surrender, but Gon refuses to give up. Impressed by Gon's unwavering spirit and the complete absence of hatred in his eyes, Hanzo voluntarily forfeits the match, giving Gon the victory. He then secures his own place as a Hunter by swiftly defeating his next opponent, Pokkle. Following the exam, he gives his business cards to Gon and his friends, offering to serve as a guide if they ever visit his country.
Hanzo re-emerges later in the succession war arc, where he is recruited by Kurapika to serve as a bodyguard for the Kakin Empire's princes on the Black Whale ship. He is initially assigned to protect Prince Momoze but is reassigned to guard her younger brother, Marayam, by the queen's order. After Momoze is killed in his absence, Hanzo is consumed by guilt and vows to avenge her death. He later fulfills this promise by tricking the murderer into confessing and then executing him. This event highlights his strong sense of responsibility and justice.
His key relationships include his respect and gratitude toward Gon, whose character moved him to change his approach to victory. He also forms a professional bond with Kurapika, accepting a dangerous bodyguard mission at his request. During the succession war, he works closely alongside Biscuit Krueger while guarding Prince Marayam.
Hanzo demonstrates significant development from his first appearance. He learns to use Nen soon after the Hunter Exam, mastering it in under six months, which is notably faster than the main protagonists. His skills as a ninja evolve to incorporate these new spiritual energies. He also shows emotional growth, moving from a purely pragmatic torturer to someone who can be affected by a child's resilience and later takes deep personal responsibility for the life of a prince under his protection.
Regarding his notable abilities, Hanzo possesses immense physical strength, speed, and agility. He can support his entire body weight on a single finger and has reflexes that allow him to easily outpace Gon. He is a master of martial arts capable of knocking a person unconscious with a precise blow to the neck and is also proficient in various torture techniques. His equipment includes hidden blades strapped to his forearms beneath bandages. As a Nen user, his known ability is called Hanzo Skill 4, a variation of the分身 technique. This allows him to project an astral clone of himself that can fly, pass through solid matter, and interact with the physical world. While this clone is active, his original body falls into a completely unconscious state. The technique is dispelled if the original body is touched or spoken to, and the clone must return to the body to end the ability. The numbering of this technique implies that at least three other secret skills exist.
